  • Sergio's f-stop 3/23/00
Description: Ortiz has an artist's eye, seeing images that appear before the rest of us and yet go completely unnoticed.
Comments: There's nothing fancy about the site design and there's not a bunch of bells and whistles.  The design is clean and user-friendly and it's the content that wins the award for today's pick.  Sergio Ortiz has been a photojournalist for over 30 years and presents a neatly organized collection of his work - people, places, things and early work (plus articles).  The early work includes original photographs of Ali, Nixon and O.J., to name a few and his photos and essays have been published in some major mags - check it out.

  • Gonzo Land 3/20/00
Description: Gonzo began as a photo-agency and quickly took aim at spreading it's interests within the cultural and digital landscape.
Comments: Some very strange and interesting stuff here - from the beginning, you know that you're in for some visual art/illustration that's different.  The editorial illustration and celebrities sections of the gallery include some rather amusing renderings of your favorite politicians and stars, and there's some really cool photography too.  It's a pop cultural type of thing - colorful and a big sense of humor - go check it out!

  • Demotivate.com 3/13/00
Description: This funny and humorous site has great banners, art, and demotivational phrases to lighten up your workday.
Comments: What could be better on a Monday morning than to go to work, get on the web and see who won today at coolstop, then go to the site that won and be told "You will never amount to anything" or asked "Can't you even fail right?"  It's sorta like the old "I'm good enough and darn it, people like me" thing, only in reverse.  Go get your dose of demotivations, take the quiz to confirm what a lazy slug you are, then, as that infamous radio personality says, "go take on the day."  This site just might help ya do it.  All I wanna know is how this extreme slacker executed such a nice design...

  • Netdiver Network 3/12/00
Description: a new media resource and freelance community
Comments: Today's Best of the Cool is another alternative kind of portal and the site design and graphics are wonderful.  The "imagineering sparks" section says to "make this your creative divingboard" and it's full of inspiration and interesting destinations - screenshots, too!  A "low noise and high quality" webzine and "toolbox" full of resources for designers are also featured, and all-in-all, this community-oriented cool-portal is a true winner...

  • sadandotcom 3/8/00
Description: Personal website of Meir Sadan, a 17 year old living in Israel - features a journal, photos and free type
Comments: This site from a 17 year old features a journal which is honest and interesting, along with a nicely organized collection of personal photos and a sizable list free fonts to download.  What impressed me was the clean, simple design and easy navigation.  For what it's worth, I think today's winner is an excellent personal site.

  • Live from the Estuary 3/7/00
Description: Take a virtual field trip to the estuary without getting your feet wet!
Comments: Today's winning site is targeted toward school kids, but I learned a bunch of stuff I didn't know there... I never even heard of an estuary - have you?  It's "part land, part sea...where fresh river water and salty sea water mix."  This site is full of facts and excellent photography related to these environmental areas in North Carolina (areas like this are found throughout the world along the oceans' edges).  What's really unique about the site, though, is that it offers electronic field trips via the Internet - really cool use of the web - go check it out.

  • halfbakery 3/4/00
Description: whatever you can think of - a communal database of ideas and inventions, edited by everybody who wants to
Comments: A think tank for everyone.  One guy has this idea about cable in a can - just spray it into the outlet and spray a path to the device input and presto! - no ugly cable (just an ugly pile of "cable goo").  Then, there's "laundry balls", a time-release capsule of fabric softener - hey! - didn't some company already invent that?  Today's winning site is where you wanna go if you have an idea for something that'll change the world (or not).  Calling itself a communal database of ideas and inventions, it's fun to see some of the ideas that people come up with - clean design and easy to get around.
