FIRST HUMAN EMBRYO CLONES ANNOUNCED Scientists at a laboratory in Massachusetts announced they have created a number of human embryos through cloning. Doctors at Advanced Cell Technology Inc. in Worcester, Mass., said the effort was not to allow the embryo to grow, but to harvest it for stem cells that might be used to treat disease. . . . The announcement sparked immediate criticism from those concerned with the ethical problem of creating human life to destroy it. President Bush has been among those opposed to human cloning. The House of Representatives approved a bill this year that would have set fines and prison terms for attempts to clone humans, but the Senate didn't take the bill up and it is did not become law.
