POPE TAKES TO THE INTERNET In the first Internet message issued by a pope, John apologized for sexual abuse by clergy. The text of the message responds to reports of rape and forced abortions in 23 countries, including the United States, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines. According to the Los Angeles Times, the pope said the church wants to "apologize unreservedly to the victims for the pain and disillusionment caused to them," as well as to seek "open and just procedures to respond to the complaints in this area," and committing to "compassionate and effective care for the victims, their families, the whole community, and the offenders themselves." -- phre3e
