U.S. OFFICIALLY IN RECESSION The U.S. economy is in recession, the National Bureau of Economic Research announced, basing its judgment on economic indicators such as industrial production, employment, real income and wholesale-retail trade. After hitting a peak in March, the 10-year economic expansion ended, and if there was any doubt about it, aftereffects of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington made the recession clear.
