The Tattered project, which "investigates the desecration and misuse of the American flag in the context of the U.S. Flag Code," started five years ago as Seth Butler's senior thesis while studying photography. He still travels around the country taking photographs for Tattered, which currently consists of 50 images – a thought-provoking exploration of "the most ubiquitious, evocative, and complex symbol of America's self-image" and how widely it's misused and misrepresented in mainstream American culture.
