photoblog of Aaron Tukey
Comments:
Aaron lives and works in San Francisco but all the photos posted over the last few months were taken in Columbia, Mexico, and Guatemala – outstanding people pics and beautiful landcapes. And check out this beauty taken back home in late November. Most of his pictures are done in black & white (some with a sepia tone) and there's some cool color too. Launched just 3 months ago and worth watching... [Photoblogs.org]
freshcut magazine 1/30/06 Description:
online art, design, and photography magazine in PDF format, dedicated exclusively to young talents (Flash) (some mature content)
Comments:
Their first issue went online on December 21st and by January 9th, over 6,000 visitors had downloaded the PDF magazine. Featuring the works of a number of creative contributors, all strictly under 21, there's 58 pages in numerouno, mostly visual – and you don't have to be under 21 to enjoy the great stuff found there...;~)) [RevolverLover]
PingMag 1/29/06 Description:
Tokyo-based magazine about 'design and making things'
Comments:
"Get up from your desks and take a walk outside! It's lovely!" From experimental electronic music to typography to the 'fashions' worn by various types of construction workers in Japan, today's pick has managed to amass almost 50 feature articles and interviews since it launched the web magazine last August. The site's actually been online since last April and there's dozens of other almost daily offerings in the archives, with some content available via podcast. Focused primarily on art, design, and technology, it hopes to provide a little inspiration – well done! [DWT < Designers who Blog]

animal ecology design site (Flash)
Comments:
It would make Suna happy to "have you feel as a friend on the same earth" as you explore his collection of wild animal photos. Animal mode sorts creatures by Family and provides related information (a Profile) for each, while the gallery shows just pictures (some larger ones) along with brief commentary. Nice site design (Flash) and great content in my opinion (plus some tasty wallpapers too).
Harry Weber 1/27/06 Description:
photography - street, people, structure, and portraits (Flash)
Comments:
In virtually all of Harry's street photos, it's the human element standing or moving about the urban environment that makes the shots so intriguing. Strangers in real time, standing on a bus, running in the rain, or walking alone against an urban wall. The photos in the people section are similar, though the characters themselves are more clearly the subjects. There's also a smaller section of extraordinairy portraits, plus another side of Harry's visual art – structures, both natural and artificial – beautiful explorations of color and form... [deformat]

visual blog
Comments:
I recently discovered that Nuno Soares, one of the people behind Neozine* (one of my faves), has a personal web site. He calls it a visual blog, sharing various visual works in progress. Nuno "started drawing since no rememberance of it" working with pens/markers on various media. His style is unique and original – a surreal approach to creativity. And his "brother is a doodle." Drawing (and working with paper) appears to be great fun for Sérgio Nuno Barros Soares de Freitas – and it's fun seeing what he's up to...;~))

little poems and orgasms
Comments:
There's plenty of monkeys among the poem and jar collections. I love panorama, brooklyn, a most creative piece – please touch the monkeys while you're there. And do explore those mysterious jars – there's a fun, creative spirit at work here. "Lots of honey is essential for trips across the Ocean!" [Net Art Links]
The Undecided 1/24/06 Description:
a blind taste test where all that matters are the issues (Flash)
Comments:
I guess I'm a day late on this one since the Canadian elections were held yesterday. But the site, designed to help the undecided align themselves with one of four political parties based on their stance on various issues and priorities, still seems useful to me even after the election. Particularly to those who are still a bit undecided – perhaps it will give them the knowledge they need to be ready for the next one. Besides, I really like the interface...;~)) [iBLOG]
eksten.net - webgraphix 1/23/06 Description:
font archive (primarily intended for viewing samples), plus wallpapers and links
Comments:
"Hi, I'm Chrissie and I'm a fontaholic..." The archive contains almost 700 fonts and dingbats and though some may be downloaded from the site directly, many are not due to her respecting each font creator's distribution rules. Chrissie suggests to "look upon this archive as a font showing area instead where I do the hunting and serve you the goodies..." Fair enough, especially because she's also taken the time to provide a link to each font creator's website. There's also a small section of links plus some wallpapers for you Goo Goo Dolls fans. More through the front door, online since '96...;~))

show what you got - a fun project that has the power to make the world a better place
Comments:
They're only accepting submissions until January 30th (at least for this competition) and if you want to have some creative fun and a chance to be a winner, here's your chance. "So will you as the winner get the money and become a rich man? Nope, we're not that selfish." The winning entries are going to be sold at that big online auction site with the proceeds going to "an organisation helping homeless children in Brazil." Seems a worthy cause. To get involved, download and print out the van, get all artistic on it, then cut cut cut, assemble, and send in a photo of it. Some of the entries so far are great – have fun...;~)) [French'N'Fresh]

collecting professional acts of social responsibility
Comments:
"Graphic design is young: 95% of the graphic designers who have ever lived are alive today. Together we can still define our profession: will it be about inventing visual lies to create larger market share, or will it be about taking responsibility for helping build a better world?" A collection of posters done for various non-profit organizations and charitable causes by some very talented designers who care enough to "use their creative skill to improve the human condition..." photography and other works from design student Jakob Stenqvist (Flash)
Comments:
From Swedish design student Jakob Stenqvist, just launched a month ago, comes a showcase of photography and other visual works. His Portraits are outstanding as are many of the shots in Alive. Cool illustrations and interface too. "Can you hear my NOISE?"

Since last August, I've found 5 cool sites there. On one side, brief site reviews with tasty screenshots, updated frequently, plus a site of the week. On the right, the publicboard. daybattle, the graphical examination of the environment of foo and fern and everything they're surrounded by with the help of drawing (mature content)
Comments:
"We use the battle to improve drawing skills, visualize inspirations, and advance imagination. but its also supposed to work as a stress relief, feed creativity, burn energy and of course waste your time." Two dudes are engaged in what they call daybattles with a fair amount of pugnaciousness, but they're out to "stop violence" and "keep it on paper." They warn that their drawings are not for children under 18 because the "scenes or actions may be re-enacted." So please don't try any of this at home kiddies! I hope the most recent battle isn't the last as hinted in the drawing, but if it is, there's still over 6 months worth of daybattles in the archives (along with downloadable versions) – really creative stuff from foo and fern...;~))
HEL LOOKS 1/16/06 Description:
street fashion photos taken in the streets and clubs of Helsinki
Comments:
Liisa and Sampo call it a hobby project. They like "fashion, clothing, young people and photography" and with permission, take photos of people on the street and in clubs around Helsinki to "document Finnish looks." Along with each photo are comments made by the photo subject regarding their tastes in fashion and style. The duo behind the project say they "we want to encourage people to dress individually and create their own styles" and among the entries are many interesting individuals indeed – cool concept!

Comments:
From China, a simple click-through gallery of 101 original illustrations by graphic designer Zhang Shuo. In the designer's own words by way of the site's description, "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." Part of which also happens to be the name of Zhang Shuo's blog...;~))

experiments in animation (Flash)
Comments:
Vincent's collection of interactive Flash experiments is huge – optical illusions, 3D effects, and other graphical delights. He's also a math teacher and uses Flash to help his students understand the topic better through animating various mathematical properties. Besides roughly 250 animations (which is amazing considering he started the site less than 2 years ago), several dozen tutorials are also available (French only). If you're a designer into Flash, I think you'll enjoy this one...
New York City Walk 1/11/06 Description:
images and commentary from a 2-1/2 year project, walking every street on the island of Manhattan
Comments:
"The biggest celebrity in New York City is New York itself." After living there for a few years, Caleb came across a building "off the beaten path" and realized that what one sees on the "heavily-travelled Avenues" of Manhattan is a small part of the real picture – there were secrets to be discovered on those smaller streets and he decided to "explore them systematically." Well. By the time Caleb was done, 2-1/2 years later, he had walked every street in Manhattan – all 700 miles of 'em! Amazing determination to have pulled that off – cheers to Caleb for the accomplishment and for documenting it so well in photos and commentary on the website. Now we're talkin' cool...;~)) [what about the plastic animals? < Disarranging Mine]

Comments:
"He shoots with plastic... mostly." Bill's got over 2 dozen cameras, including a number of toy cameras like the Lomo, Holga, and Diana, to name a few. Based in Chicago, he's obviously fond of shooting with film (there seems to be just one digital shot in the entire archives) and his collection includes many shots taken with handmade lenses. Explore by theme, camera used, film process, or film type – and enjoy!

Today's pick features a big collection of graffiti (and graphic propaganda) from a krew of artists in Bilbao, Spain. There's photos of over 100 works from 2005 alone and the archives go back to 1999. If you enjoy real street art, this one's for you...;~)) [upwardlink]
Hmto 1/5/06 Description:
illustration, characters, and photography (Flash)
Comments:
Nuno Soares at Neozine* nails it – "Amazing doodler Alert! Funny characters and smooth style." He's talking about Reynaldo Rodríguez, an artist from Venezuela who goes by the name Hmto. Simply fantastic handrawn illustrations and personajes. There's some cool photos too, including shots of Hmto's very odd paper bag characters. What fun!
Alex Fakso 1/4/06 Description:
street photography (Flash)
Comments:
I can't say which photo was my fave 'cause I love all 12 of 'em. Great urban style. I really like the way the images fill the window at any resolution. It's a quick and enjoyable browse – graffiti, people on the street, trains – enjoy! [CreativeCream]
SerraGlia 1/3/06 Description:
street messages (art?)
Comments:
"To change the society one must have imagination." Part of SerraGlia's manifesto is shouted in oversize caps on the splash page, so large that they don't fit in a 1024-wide window and you have to scroll way down to get to the enter link. Over a dozen projects deliver the artist's various street messages. We Live Into Shoeboxes, Art-ificial, and The War is Over (?) are my faves... for now. "A man without imagination is a death man, a society without the imagination doesn't have an evolution..."

online magazine for photography, art, and music (Flash)
Comments:
"Be creative. Be inside. Be you." It's an ambitious project with its first issue containing over 250 pages of works from over a dozen contributors ("professional photographers, new comers and artists") – an online mag containing elegant photography and art, plus music-related articles, which even include a nifty music player. It's intended to have "the appearance of traditional highgloss printmagazines" – they've really pulled it off in my opinion and the content is outstanding! [zeroin]
