[weAREtheIMAGEmakers] 2/28/06 Description:
a monthly online publication featuring a range of artists, photographers and designers from around Australia
Comments:
Besides a total of almost 2 dozen creative contributors to the artwork and photography galleries there's also 5 artists featured (with interviews) in issue 01 of this brand new online publication (or magazine). What they all have in common is that they're Australian, though the editors do say they "may feature some work from NZ if it's real good." Some beautiful works in this first issue! If you're a talented Australian imagemaker and want to be considered for inclusion, the submission deadline for the next issue is about 3 weeks away... [iBLOG]
The Regulars 2/26/06 Description:
a remote shutter, a tripod, a gas mask, and a necktie...
Comments:
He may be a burnout, but this 12th regular is the first with an adorned gasmask – nice touch! On one hand, this new site is based on a most amusing concept. There's Jason, dressed uniquely for the part in each photo, but always wearing that same darn thing (actually, I think he's got 2 different gasmasks at his disposal). Nice shirt! On the other hand, maybe Jason's had a glimpse of something grim coming in the future, a vision of sorts. We won't reach a point where we'll all have to wear those things, will we? You don't think? Naaaaaw...;~))
Desktopography 2/25/06 Description:
nature themed desktop wallpapers
Comments:
"Designers spend around 90% of their waking life in front of a computer so the most appealing genre for a wallpaper would be one [that] has beautiful design mixed with all important aspect of being outdoors." Besides wallpapers from Pete and Marius who designed the site, there's works from a half dozen other designers – download them individually or as one big file with of all 11 images (.zip format). And you sure don't have to be a designer to enjoy these tasty treats (and the dreamy soundscape).
SeeSaw Magazine 2/24/06 Description:
featuring international contemporary photography, found photography, photo-related essays, and interviews
Comments:
"We believe that the most powerful and compelling photography in made in response to reality itself; when it is inpired by the gravity of of experience, draws attention to what might otherwise go unnoticed, preserves what one marvels at in a moment, or evokes that which one feels should never be forgotten." Today's pick, a photography magazine, hopes to "present the art of photography at its finest" and they pull it off nicely in my opinion with interesting exhibits, essays, and interviews (though I do find it odd that images are used for all textual content). There's 3 issues in the archives besides the current one – they're all superb. [Design(Radar]
ruby mag 2/20/06 Description:
monthly mag bringing together and sharing the work of different artists (Flash)
Comments:
The 4th monthly issue was right on time when it went online 5 days ago. Launched back in November, today's pick is a superb visual magazine with 8 contributing artists featured in the current issue – sweet! [SRF.STN]
time tales 2/19/06 Description:
a home for lost photos, a resting place, for the nameless and the lost
Comments:
"A picture needs memories to be an image." Divided into 5 time periods between pre-1930 and the present, today's pick is "a collection of found photographs" and "does not want to reveal [the photos'] mysteries." Found in places like flea markets, alleys, or cabinets of an abandoned house, each of the pictures certainly has an unrevealed story behind it. "Who are these people?" Where did that couple in the photo from the 70s end up with time? Mysteries indeed. And though I don't care for blinking text and wish the e-cards feature worked, the thought-provoking content is the real cool today. [reminded by creativity/machine]
Okcal-polaroid 2/18/06 Description:
polaroid photo diary from Tokyo
Comments:
"I am Yuko Takenami, live in Japan." Yuko describes her photoblog as "trivial daily life with sweet polaroid SX-70" and feels "this is the most beautiful work" – it's just one of many beauties you'll come across in her personal collection of snapshots...;~))
SciCult 2/17/06 Description:
bridging science & culture through contemporary art
Comments:
Explaining it's SciCult, not scicult, today's pick describes its name as "academic shorthand for 'Science & culture'" though the Cult part of the label has a double meaning. They hope to provide a platform for artists encouraging "creative experimentation across disciplines." There's currently 17 exhibiting artists in this "science-related contemporary art gallery" and the content, which includes works and background information, is just splendid. Enjoy!
Reciprocity-failure 2/16/06 Description:
photography, politics, life, and the occasional ufo...
Comments:
Stan quotes Depression Era photographer Dorothea Lange: "The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." I remember seeing some of his Pet Cemetery Project pictures featured at FILE and love his signage pics and the SF Garages series (among other things) – uncommon photography! Some occasional rants and articles too.
Vectors 2/15/06 Description:
an international journal that brings together visionary scholars with cutting-edge designers and technologists to propose a thorough rethinking of the dynamic relationship of form to content in academic research
Comments:
"Operating at the intersection of culture, creativity, and technology, the journal focuses on the myriad ways technology shapes, transforms, reconfigures, and/or impedes social relations..." From the Annenberg Center for Communication at USC comes this exploration into how "increasingly technologically-mediated existence" impacts society, politics, and culture. The current issue, Mobility, was about to be released when Katrina came around, casting its relevance "into surreal relief." Those with less access to mobility certainly suffered – the stakes were high. There's 7 projects featured in Mobility that'll make you think. And don't miss Vector Space – just click and drag to begin... [ reBlog]
pinhole.cz 2/14/06 Description:
information about the simplest image-creating device, its history, and sample photographs
Comments:
"You simply won't find a more natural and more magical way to take photographs." David's enthusiasm about pinhole cameras certainly shines through – he's been interested in them since his youth. "The creative freedom, experimental nature and atmosphere of photographs taken using the pinhole camera soon captivated me to such an extent that today I take photographs almost exclusively using this technique and I ended up selling my SLR camera." In addition to a wealth of information about the cameras and a gallery, David also provides a downloadable Windows program to help other enthusiasts calculate optimal pinhole diameter, focal length, and exposure times. Add a great related links page and you've got a site that's "definitely worth a visit." [unalog]
solaas 2/12/06 Description:
interactive explorations in Flash and Java
Comments:
Leonardo's first Flash project, done in 2003, was intended "to play with simple forms and sounds to represent scenes with a minimum of elements." Road Play is simple but very cool in my opinion – an interesting precursor to more complex things to come. Like Dreamlines, a Java project done last April, where your choice of dream subject keywords provides an interactive visual experience. And on the fun side, be sure to check out the Orifice suite of 'applications' – the "abnormal cousins of a paint program and a word processor" – unpredictable and most amusing...;~))

photography projects
Comments:
A quietly designed personal portfolio of photography and other visual works. I particularly like Institutions, Time, and Black and White, but all 8 projects are certainly worth checking out... [Heavy Backpack]
VectorPeeps.com 2/10/06 Description:
vector art lovers' community - galleries, forums, interviews, and tutorials
Comments:
This community formed around vector art has been online for about 5 months and already has over 100 members. It's the galleries I like the most, but there's some interesting interviews and useful tutorials too. And call me silly, I also enjoyed exploring the big variety of themes – loved the colorful CodeRacer skin! "The world should be vectorized." [Spoono]
BluesReset 2/9/06 Description:
pictures, sounds, drawings and paintings
Comments:
After listening to w.h.y.? and taking in some tasty holgas and polaroids I knew this amazing creative space was gonna be today's pick. But I wondered who's behind it and what's up with the Her Part and His Part. Who's this guy handing his heart to? I really had to dig but finally came up with some answers (with the help of a translator). Mathieu used to play in a band. And perhaps her name is Aurélie. They lived in Paris and moved to Nantes. And they've been to Vietnam. Perhaps. Besides the sounds and photos, there's paintings and illustrations too. Did I already say creative space? You bet!
Pulpo 2/8/06 Description:
photoblog featuring street photography from Japan
Comments:
A Japanese photographer who shoots with film in black & white and goes by the name Jumpedforjoy is behind the photoblog. There's beautiful tokyo bay scapes and
sunsets in the collection of photos and the street category is a great starting point. Some phenomenal pictures here... [Photoblogs.org]
Setpixel 2/7/06 Description:
a collection of articles focused on interactive installations, aesthetics through computation, and reactive experiments, etc.
Comments:
Media artist Charles Forman (a/k/a Setpixel) says he's always been fascinated by fire, admitting that may be an unhealthy attraction. "Playing with virtual fire is much safer." That's exactly what he did in the first of 6 cool experiments he's written about on the site. There's 7 other like-minded individuals participating as authors – artists, programmers, and developers, all interested in things like interaction theory, psychology/behavior, and computer vision – interesting content throughout, supplemented by video. I also enjoyed Robot Mirror, done by Glen Murphy, who "makes random things that some call software and some call art..."
maotik 2/5/06 Description:
multimedia art (Flash)
Comments:
5 mixed media art projects done over a 2 year period are covered on the site. In one interactive installation, the user sits on a red carpet and travels through a sequence of videos based on their navigation decisions. Several other interactive performance art works process image and sound in real time with amazing results. And the 2 Insomni videos simply rock! [zeroin]
Jyoseph.com 2/4/06 Description:
a St. Louis based photoblog and blog
Comments:
"Featuring local artists will be a lot of fun for me." We'll start off with a little bonus link for the day – Joseph's brand new community site for photobloggers in St. Louis. Today's pick is his own photoblog and blog and the way he's combined them is impressive (look for the red star). On the photo side, I've got to say I love this wall – and check out this long exposure – wow! In the blog, I learned that Jyo lives in a very old house and discovered an excellent tutorial on building a lightbox. Nice photoblog. Nice blog...;~)) [nearly nice.]
Error Magazine 2/3/06 Description:
online arts magazine
Comments:
Calling itself "a central location for all angles of creative output" and planning to publish bi-monthly, this online arts magazine just launched their first issue featuring "photography, illustration, fiction, poetry and music" from 17 different creative contributors (plus the musicians whose music is featured in Mp3). It's a non-commercial affair "set up to give something back to the creative sphere" and hopes to provide exposure for "artists of all kinds." Off to a great start if you ask me! [pixelsurgeon]
