personal graphic design and illustration portfolio (Flash)
Comments:
In the raster section, an illustration with the word Vista is simply beautiful to me. And the king in Abstract Wario is quite expressive. "I will kill you with my sweetness," says one of the vector drawings. Tastefully done, visually emotive – a colorful collection of art, plus the bonus of some cool wallpapers and photos... glowlab 9/26/04 Description:
a Brooklyn-based arts lab committed to exploring the nature of urban public space Comments:
I've been following it regularly most of this year, the site of an art lab in Brooklyn "particularly interested in the idea of public space as a creative medium." Call it a "hub for pulic-space arts" both offline (in the form of events and projects in the community) and online, providing a space "where artists and the public can connect and learn," The experimental discipline of psychogeography, having its roots in the 50s and "concerned with the ways in which the geographic environment affects emotions and behavior," is the group's primary focus. Since I first encountered the site, it's led me to all types of interesting things out on the web – urban exploration, art projects using maps (and tube maps too), street theater, psychogeographic pursuits, and street art. Their own projects are cool too – like One Block Radius, "a psy.geo documentary of a single NYC block." I love the interface and the photos. There's other glowlab projects you'll want to explore too, plus an ongoing supply of articles about others' projects related to art and public spaces – fascinating!
Colourcountry 9/25/04 Description:
a collection of things
Comments:
"The trouble with diaries is they're badly organised. Not disorganised, actively, badly organised." That's one of the things I like about the site – it's more freeform in structure – wiki-like, organizing content through its contextual threads rather than by date. It make sense (to me anyway), especially because the content is so varied. Then there's the clean, minimal design – like that too. Most of all, though, it's the content. Amusing stuff. Why inflict your reader with highly verbose (and possibly stuffy) music reviews when 80 columns will do the job? Each review is just 56-characters long. And I don't know why but I really like photographs of London – never been there except via the web and today's pick has some of those too. There's other entertaining scratchings too – a neat little personal not-a-blog...;~)) ⇐ Thanks Lonita!
but she's a girl... 9/23/04 Description:
weblog of a biologist, Apple/Unix geek, audiophile, avid reader and film buff, and amateur photographer
Comments:
The Femina geekoides is a little "different from the rest of female-kind" and the girl who goes by bsag heads "straight for the computer/hi-fi magazines aisle." One of the reasons she created the weblog is to say "hi, you're not alone" to all the other female geeks out there. I'll take the market over the mall too (thanks Julius) – phonecamshot included. Another enjoyable (and thought-provoking) post ends with bsag wishing she had a "Firewire port in [her] skull" so she can share a film she's been making in her head. I could use one of those! There's more interesting stuff, geeky and otherwise, plus a photoblog – it's got personality and a nice design to boot...
True Americans 9/21/04 Description:
print, show off, and send a picture with your favourite presidential candidate
Comments:
Though the "two hicks from Belgium" behind the site intend to leave it online after November 2nd, that's the date the "mailbox will be closed and no more pictures will be uploaded." That's because today's pick is directly related to the U.S. Presidential election. But you won't find "endless election debates" there, nor do Gert and Werner endorse any candidate. Rather, they're inviting all Americans to submit their own photos, holding the appropriate placard (Bush, Kerry, Nader, or Undecided). The submitted photos are then cropped to show only a head shot of the subject and you're asked "Do you think you know people?" Click on the head shot and you get to see the full photo – they're right when they say "You might be pleasantly surprised." I was in many cases. There's still time to participate if you're so inclined – see the guidelines. Cool concept guys (and more fun than all that other political noise)...;~))
Always Curious 9/19/04 Description:
A daily photo journal - a life told through photography for anyone who is curious
Comments:
Charlie's Morning Walk is one of many great shots in the Natural Wonders category (as is Sidewalk Collage). There's 5 other categories, plus 2 pop-up Lomo galleries – all good. And I wouldn't want you to miss this shot – what a cool portrait!

film, music, travel, photography, and other observations
Comments:
I love the first shot in a series of over 100 pics from a recent trip to Iceland. Another neat project, a directory to photo booths in 9 U.S. states plus London (so far, that is), which I discovered via Axis of Ævil, is actually what led me to the site. Brian's into running, music, travel, nostalgia, and the local scene at home in Massachusetts – the blog's an intereresting mix. But all those photographic projects on the sidebar, like the 2 mentioned above, are really cool in my opinion – and so is Brian's Amherstiana site...
Marmalade Chainsaw 9/15/04 Description:
an online scrapbook - a reminder to always look at things just a little bit differently
Comments:
Aninda, a "26 year old Indonesian marooned in Texas" who flys frequently, has seen a lot of places, visiting both Jakarta and Bali just this summer. The travel map is cool, and so is Ninda's collection of photos, taken with a number of different cameras including disposables and Holgas – yummy. There's also some great guest shots. Seeing things "just a little bit differently" and sharing what one sees is a very good thing...;~))

Comments:
I love this photo. This shot too. I also like the fact that you can browse by monthly sets of thumbnails or by the big list of all photo titles. A web developer/amateur photographer hailing from Dublin, Caitriona has been "finding it much easier to describe things with pictures rather than words" lately – you can file that under good things... the drawings of John Casey
Comments:
"I've always made creatures. My mom saved some drawings that I created when I was about three years old. The figures in these drawings show not only the distorted perceptions of a child, but a fascination with skulls, teeth, spirographic eyes, and invented body parts." John Casey, an artist who's also involved in painting, sculpting, and photography, says he always makes time to draw and his site currently features 35 black and white line drawings. Creepy creatures – quite an imagination! [Newstoday®]
Alhomepage.com 9/8/04 Description:
Flash site of French designer Alexandre Hapet Etienne
Comments:
Going a little retro today, back to the days of Flash 5. The site launched in late 2000 and was updated regularly for about a year. Seemingly inactive since then except for one section added in 2003, I'm sharing the site today because I think it's an excellent marker for some interesting times on the web, in terms of design experimentation. Besides, I just love the interface – putting oneself in explore mode can be downright inspiring at times... [Superbe]
Gran Circo 9/6/04 Description:
a personal photography project celebrating the magic of circus shows (Flash)
Comments:
I have no idea what kind of camera Anahi used for the project, but if it's not a toycamera, she must really have some magic up her sleeve. It's the magic of the circus that inspired Ani to take the special photos, which truly capture the feeling in my opinion. "The reality goes so far away for a few moments and people can completely enjoy themselves." Fascinated with the "music, colors and lights which [give] soul to each scene" experienced at a circus, Ani "took part in lots of circus events during a year" and the result is a real treat...;~)) [Lounge72#]

I thought the content was limited until I reloaded the main page and found the key to a number of other series, each one including its own reflection, devotion, impression, and illusion. Beautiful images and words throughout – a quiet sense of spirit – impressive...
www.StencilArchive.org 9/3/04 Description:
"the internet's largest collection of stencil graffiti images and information"
Comments:
Russell's now in San Francisco, where he discovered the mother lode of stencil art when he moved there in 1997. But it was during a trip to Europe a few years before that when he shot his first photo of a 3-story-high text painted on a building in Berlin using stencils. He "never stopped." The site claims to be the web's "largest collection of stencil graffiti images" and I don't doubt it – there's over 2,600 images and counting, not to mention related information and artist interviews. Sites like Russell's make coolstop very happy, thank you. BTW, if you're looking for cool stencil fonts, check out Stencil Revolution, where I found today's pick (via GUI Galaxy)...

Comments:Language. I select anger. "You don't even believe me." Refresh. "That's the one thing I can't stand." Quick switch to hope. "I can see it in your eyes." Refresh. "Please smile, please..." Love such random things (not to mention the pixel goodness in test-tube), but my favorite things about today's pick are the collection of 99 square photos and the bitmap sketchbook... [FILE]

photoblog of a graphic designer living in the upper midwest
Comments:
A picture of remnants was on the main page the first time I visited, immediately making me want to explore. A shot of wood type, one of a old train, and an outstanding moon shot were among my tastiest encounters, though there's too many to mention 'em all. The archives, going back to early December, include some amazing macro shots (and Lomos too). Thanks Brad...
