  • siatkowski photography 6/30/07
Description: photos and moving pictures by Darek Siatkowski (Flash)
Comments: "Naked.Human.Portrait." Naked places as well. Magical blurs on objects, like chairs in corners. Sisters against a cloudy sky. Grainy black & white images of tree stumps apparently used as work tables by blacksmiths. If ever I wished I could link directly to certain images to share their magic with you more precisely, it would be right now – enjoy the fine art photography of Darek Siatkowski...  [milk bar]

  • Institute of Modern Science 6/29/07
    Description: collage art
Comments: Following yesterday's anonymous node, we're still in anonymous mode. Though I have no idea as to the who behind today's pick, its content is one of the coolest collages I've seen. And it's certainly the largest I've seen by far – a whopping 12,190,061 square pixels – wow!

  • an anonymous node 6/28/07
    Description: personal drawings
Comments: "Have you met life today?®" It's odd to say the least, seeing that same character sketched on various sheets of paper and printed materials. Or is it a bunch of different characters, all assuming the same strange pose? Presented anonymously, perhaps it's a collection of quickly drawn self-portraits – all somewhat mysterious and playful. "You are incredibly brilliant..." That too...  [Ample Sanity]

  • Visual.eMich 6/27/07
    Description: Belgium-based photoblog
Comments: A beautiful Austrian sunrise and a humorous shot titled "to consume with moderation" are among the reasons for sharing the site with you, though they're certainly not the only powerful images...

  • colondee :D 6/26/07
    Description: a smilie database
Comments: As coolstop approaches its 10-year anniversary on the web (a shameless plug, I know), the ubiquitous Internet smiley (or emoticon) is approaching its 25th, a real long time in web years. What's that got to do with today's pick? Well, there's over 600 smilies in its database, which for some of us, can be most amusing, thank you...;~))

  • Copyright Culture 6/25/07
Description: an active movement to question the limits of intellectual property laws, explore their effect on society, and create public awareness about their true function
Comments: "The campaign is not an anti-copyright organization. Rather, it exists to expose the true nature of intellectual property laws, which exist to protect not the artists, writers, designers, choreographers and other creative people who produce and manufacture content; rather it protects the interests of the corporate entities which control the methods of distribution." Today's pick is the "senior graphic design thesis" of Darrin Crescenzi and takes a look at copyright culture, hoping to "create discourse" on the subject. Materials are available if you wish to participate by creating a registered mark and submitting a photo of it. So far, the exhibit is small, but thought-provoking...

  • thepanphoto 6/24/07
    Description: photography collective (Flash)
Comments: "If you're photographing in color you show the color their clothes – if you use black and white, you will show the color of their soul." Among the works of the five displayed photographers are numerous captured moments in time, some in color, some in black and white – each quite colorful in one way or another. "There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer." That's you – see what you see and enjoy...  [Linkage]

  • Face your pocket! 6/23/07
Description: things living in the pockets of your bag, jeans or jacket...
Comments: By default, the site's in Russian, so here's a direct shot to the English version. "Things that are living in the pockets of your bag, jeans or jacket... are all the treasures our project is looking for!" In addition to scanning those objects found in one's pockets, participants are asked to place their face (or part of it) on the scanner at the same time. Over 100 people have already responded and the resulting gallery is several notches above interesting – cool idea!

  • Nguan 6/22/07
    Description: photographs (Flash)
Comments: "The back of your head is affirmation enough." That odd meta-description in the source still has me thinking. A recent revisit to the site, which has been listed as a notable since last year, left me highly inspired. Nguan's taken some amazing photographs – I especially like the people pics...

  • The Third Eye 6/21/07
Description: photography of Jerome Icardo (Flash)
Comments: Views of light and shadows within interior spaces where "feelings of loneliness and daydream emerge" is how Jerome Icardo describes the five works in the Shine A Light series. Phenomenal fine art if you ask me. I love Everyday People too...

  • Franschhoek Motor Museum 6/20/07
Description: online exhibition of the Franschhoek Motor Museum, portraying the evolution of the automobile (Flash)
Comments: Looks like some bucks went into producing the site, a slick online exhibition of the Franschhoek Motor Museum in South Africa and the L'Ormarins Wine Farm, its apparent sponsor. The museum itself houses over 200 automobiles "ranging from a 1898 Beeston motor tricycle to a 2003 Ferrari Enzo supercar." The site currently features 100 selected vehicles from the collection with multiple view photos, samples of how the engines sound, and get this, even a downloadable ringtone for each (.mp3 format). If you're a car enthusiast, prepare to be totally engaged...  [Roxlu]

  • Ask the CSS Guy 6/19/07
Description: providing CSS assistance and tutorials to whoever asks
Comments: "I realize that a name like 'Ask the CSS guy' is a bit pretentious, but saying 'Ask A CSS Guy' doesn't quite sound as good, does it? So, yeah, I'm positioning myself as an expert, but anybody who is anybody knows I'm not THE expert." The expert or not, CSS Guy answers questions sent in by readers in pretty good detail – a useful resource in the form of a blog for beginners and advanced coders alike...

  • aperturef7 6/17/07
    Description: photography
Comments: The View from Inside is downright magical to me – a grainy and colorful, apparently post-processed moment. And damn, I miss Chicago and certain places there I passed through daily. Note that each entry has a clipped image on the left that leads to a much larger version in a pop-up – and enjoy...  [VFXY]

  • of quiet 6/16/07
    Description: photography by Tod Seelie
Comments: Today's pick is just one of Tod Seelie's four sites. He's taken photos on five continents and has been published extensively. Prepare to take in an enormous body of work, whether you start at of quiet, or at one of the other entry points to his web: tod seelie photography, everyday i live (some mature content), or sucka pants (music too) – what a gift!

  • Generative Compositional Engine 6/15/07
    Description: infinite artwork generator (Flash)
Comments: There's some rather tasty visual works in its galleries, all generated by the unique online application, which utilizes "supplied assets, user settings, aesthetic rules and a level of chaos to instantaneously create infinite artwork." Have fun creating and printing your own unique compostion...

  • bigkidfallsdown.photographs 6/14/07
Description: a hodgepodge of portraits, interiors, exteriors and whatever else happened along the way
Comments: On a forum site out there, someone asked "What's the point of this site?" Another came back with "I have no idea, but it's so random I love it." From a guy named Josh in Memphis who has a big handlebar and some facial expressions that remind me of the great Belushi, today's pick is a collection of photos, a hodgepodge if you will. And it's the portraits I really dig. "Alright then, enjoy."  [Body Collector]

  • Erratica 6/13/07
Description: an intellectual and distractive outlet
Comments: "It is my playground and laboratory in which I conduct strange experiments with my pet thesaurus to make myself seem scary through big words..." The imaginary pet thesaurus accompanies Addy, a college student who admits there's a "jaunty teenager within" who can be unpredictably volatile at times, silent at others. His writing is one of the things that immediately grabbed me, particularly something recently said about blogging:
I’m sure that at some point my posts were the pinnacle of all that I’ve written, but as I’ve found other ways to express myself through words, blogging doesn’t seem to cut it. It’s too direct. Too bland. And above all, I have this innate tendency to pour whatever creativity I can spare into almost anything I write; it’s as if blogging sucks away from everything else I could be writing.
Though "blogging in itself has lessened in importance" for Addy, he calls writing his "best resort to self expression" – blog or not, you can bet he'll continue writing (here's another I liked). And the other thing that grabbed me about today's pick is the site's design – near perfection...;~))

  • The Nephronim lair 6/12/07
    Description: visual showcase
Comments: Just a few weeks ago, Dublin-based student/designer Nephronim announced he got his site "up and running at long long long last" after having bought the domain almost a year ago. Illustration is his thing and the site showcases some visuals, which happen to be a lot more than a few. I particularly like the Folktale and Tunisian illustration projects – "great fluidity in lines and forms..."

  • My uncombed photos 6/11/07
Description: photos from New York City
Comments: "I saw another world..." says Kazik, after buying a new digital camera last December. Living in New York City, the things he sees include Shadows, fiery sunsets, and abandoned places. Anne calls his images "very nice photos" and I'd have to agree...;~))

  • v2kd.org 6/10/07
Description: an experimental online magazine (Flash)
Comments: What started as 2 graphic artists' joint portfolio took on a whole new approach after the first 2 issues when the duo invited another artist to participate. Now playing is Issue_04, featuring beautiful artworks from over a dozen creatives – I'd say online mag is the appropriate description now – something fresh and damn good!

  • Perfection 6/9/07
Description: a collection of top-quality websites and community of like-minded designers
Comments: I found another pick there recently and it features a number of other perfectly cool blog designs. Unlike most of the other so-called Design Gallery sites out there, today's pick isn't overrun by ads – a positive thing in itself, thank you. It's intended to be "a community for passionate designers to not only share their creations, but also learn from one another." And some of the members' creations (their sites, that is) are quite enjoyable – happy trails...

  • gouzou.net 6/8/07
Description: works of street artist Jace (Flash)
Comments: Jace's Gouzou character has been around. Since his "shy start" in '92, Jace has been painting and wheat pasting on walls in cities around the world including Rome, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, and Tokyo. The site showcases many of his works but there's even more to be found around the web – see Streetsy and Cosmic Hip Hop – colorful streetart from a bit of a legend...

  • floopy.nu 6/7/07
Description: personal site and blog, and a place to host some goodies
Comments: "Hello, my name is Lynn and I'm a 21-year-old German living in Australia. This is my website. And that's really all there is to know. Or not?" Besides the blog about everyday and online things, full of personality with a definite sense of humor, there's also content, or should I say goodies – from downloads to fun stuff and even a bit of Puppy Love. A real personal site – how refreshing!  [Perfection]

  • Tim Hansen 6/6/07
    Description: photo series and diary
Comments: I can't help but wonder if the people in Tim's My faces series are the same people found in Bags – I'm thinking they are. There's more faces in the diary. I'd have to call Tim Hansen a storyteller of sorts, uniquely creative with a camera. And someone's been caught...;~))

  • Imaginopedia 6/5/07
Description: a collectively authored encyclopedia where anyone with ideas, imagination and creativity can add or edit an article
Comments: "I was sitting in a coffee shop this morning doodling, when a women stopped by and talked to me about a project she had just started..." I'm glad Adrian was doodling at the time, which is probably why the artist stopped to share her new web experiment – and that's how I bumped into this wonderful new thing. I'm reminded about a story (not sure it's 'fact') from way back about songwriter/poet Dory Previn finding it necessary to scream – on an airplane. To bad Dory didn't have a Skream Box® so she might have been a little more discreet that day. Celebrating the freedom of the imagination, the artist behind today's pick sees her project as "a way to explore what it means to represent / depict things through text and images while promoting the imagination and intuition as alternative sources of truth." Imagine!

  • Joseph Remnant 6/4/07
Description: illustration and other visual art
Comments: Joseph Remnant's illustrations are full of wonderful characters – very real kind of people, like those found at the busstop. Hello to Hollywood! I like his storyboards too – energy...

  • James Ball 6/2/07
    Description: 'photostories' (Flash)
Comments: "An impromptu art-exhibition of paintings entitled 'A New American Centruy' by a young travelling painter appear briefly in downtown Crawford. The authorities have it removed." Photojournalist James Ball spent a month in "Bush's Backyard" back in 2004 during the U.S. Presidential campaign and the series of photos taken in the small Texas town are remarkable. Ball's award-winning photostory was also featured on the BBC website, where some additional shots and background information are also found. I also like the Northill project. Each story is presented as a slideshow – fortunately, there's a 'pause' button...;~))

  • tessar lo 6/1/07
    Description: ideas, drawings, and paintings
Comments: He say's he's "constantly worrying about his paintings." Tessar's got a brand new room aka studio where some cool ideas and paintings are born. "I hope this can get me some love." Me too. You deserve it...;~))  [pixelsurgeon]
