Streetart 9/30/03 Description:
a collaborative weblog for photos of DIY posters, guerilla stickers, home-made stencils, etc.
Comments:
Today's pick is an absolute gem – the main page is an ongoing collage of photos of real streetart submitted by users, currently including pics from Stuttgart, Leipzig, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Ottawa, and Hamburg, just to name a few. There's over 30 shots on the main page leading to individual pages where viewers can comment and discover some interesting links. Plenty more posters, stickers, graffiti, and stencils in the archives – I love this stuff!
longedesign.com 9/29/03 Description:
design, illustration and motion graphic (Flash and Quicktime)
Comments:
Does the image of a heart always convey the same emotion or state of mind? I think not and one of the pieces you'll find at today's pick seems to back me up on that. A little heart-shaped character named "Mr. M'Ama" is sometimes "Mr. Non M'Ama" and the difference is clearly illustrated. He also shows up as a monster. That basic heart shape can be the basis of a number of variations and the way Heric has put that little piece together is unique. You can also download wallpapers, stickers, and screensavers based on the cute little heart-shaped guy. Other interesting attractions include "Longe TV" and "Not Warranted." The site is fun and navigates in sequence. I have a feeling it's a work in progress and the "empty spaces" will eventually be filled with even more colorful diversions. I'm glad Heric let me know about the site – it's a good start to the week...
saponia.com 9/23/03 Description:
showcase of illustrations, motion graphics, and designs done from 1998 to the present
Comments:
One of Sapone's more recent works is a piece of concept art featuring an eye doctor, Dr. Strogonoff, along with a Quicktime movie of the good doctor dancing, perhaps in celebration of the rabbit wearing his glasses. There's a whole section of motion shorts, some done solely by Sapone, and some in collaboration with another artist. When you add all the original content in "motion" to everything in the section of illustrations, there's literally hundreds of works on display (don't miss the "sketches"). There's also a section of industrial designs plus another section full of interesting, abstract photos. If you're an illustrator, you'll find some real inspiration here. Sapone warned me that the site is not quite finished, but do enjoy the unique visuals...
Silmonia 9/21/03 Description:
photography - theme is: no theme
Comments:
"We want to own a museum. A museum that belongs to us, that we like, that exposes only for us and according to our desires. This museum is small but with no [boundaries]. It is called Silmonia, which has no big importance. We are happy you are visiting and want this museum to be yours..." That comes from the "special exibition" that houses photos from a number of those in the collective. The "selected works" has an "expo" with pics from France, Japan, and the USA. There's also the "memories," a photoblog of sorts. You'll know, from the background on the splash, that you're in for something good... [Newstoday®]
Dario Picciau.com 9/20/03 Description:
live arts - visual experiences (Flash)
Comments:
For starters, the site has what I think is an amazing Flash interface and a classy track playing in the background that enhances the experience bigtime. Surely enough to warrant recognizing the site, but add the content, a visual experience if you will, and we move from realm of cool to the land of the truly great. Dario calls it "a new artistic expression of the web where the image is not coming from the Artificial Intelligence but as the result of a pattern of syncronicity from the language ruling the 'unus mundus', whose signs, symbols and archetypes evolving within a vacant infinite landscape at the same time, where everything decays revives in every unit of time." I'm still processing those thoughts as I experience Dario's net version of Lou Reed's "The Raven" and pleasantly remembering what I found in "Artworks." Fine. Art... [Digital Evolution]
Living Juicy 9/19/03 Description:
to explore the mundane and the profound
Comments:
Hoping to provide "a link, a photo, a piece of art or a story that gives you the jolt you have been looking for," Syd makes it clear that the site's not a personal diary. I like her analogy – "It is not about what I had for breakfast, but rather how breakfast changed my life and made me, me." She'd like her creative outlet to help others "fulfill a creative dream." I like the motivation. Her writing and art are pretty juicy too...
jee's pixel 9/18/03 Description:
pixel art and links
Comments:
Today's pick is the site of a 21-year-old pixel artist in Korea named Jee. The "images" section has some cool, very small artworks, and though I can't read a word of Korean, the "study" section was enlightening. Plenty of links to other pixel/icon sites too. Chalk another one up to that big ol' list of pixels... [MrWong :|: The Pixel Grower]
londondreamers 9/17/03 Description:
photographs of the homeless in london (Flash)
Comments:
Today's pick is a collection of photos taken on the streets of London. People dreaming. People who live on the streets. It's a thought-provoking look at reality, to me anyway, and I like the interface. An interesting photoessay... [k10k#]
DQ 9/14/03 Description:
a collaborative open project featuring 300 dpi artworks from designers and artists for your pleasure (Flash) (mature content)
Comments:
One thing for sure about paths on the web – they often lead to somewhere you've already been. In the case of today's pick, I started at postback - linklist, which took straight to the site. 15 minutes of browsing through the 2 issues was enough to tell me I've got a good one today. A beautiful art magazine with works by some well-known designers and artists, its Flash interface realistically emulates turning pages. Not a new concept, but today's pick does it well. As I processed the site, the contact's email address got my attention. Seems another very coolprevious pick is connected to today's. I love when that happens...
mntY _pub EP 9/11/03 Description:
5 tracks by Justin Mysza (Flash)
Comments:
Straightforward cool. Five musical mixes combining fresh sounds with samples of some of the ol' greats like The Who, Black Sabbath, and America. Justin Mysza is the creator and "all tracks are available for immediate download" in .mp3 format. Pretty good stuff. I've got 'em – go get 'em... [surfstation]
go above 9/8/03 Description:
a mentality that inspires me to manifest my dreams against all adversities (Flash)
Comments:
Whether it's arrows painted on a van, or a human figure painted on a wall with a finger pointing upward, or just the word "above" repetively stenciled, it's obvious that rising above is the common theme behind the art. The parents told the artist as a child that "the only incorrect way to paint is to not paint at all." It led to self confidence and a large body of work executed on the streets of Paris. Personal strength led the artist to "pierce" the city while learning a new language and culture. In the challenging life of the artist and the street art itself, the message comes through. Keep your head up... [k10k#]
ctrlaltdel.org 9/5/03 Description:
net.art.project in progress since 1996
Comments:
Peter Luining's art is currently being featured in offline exhibitions from Mexico to Austria, though it's definitely what one would call net.art. He first encountered the Internet in 1995 and saw its potential for achieving interactivity – that was a beginning, it seems, for Peter's ongoing research into interactive sounds and images via webpages. The site contains many of his works and links to projects he's been involved with. If you're into conceptual art and experimental Flash and Shockwave projects, you'll probably like this one. I downloaded Peter's "ZNC sound & color browser" this morning – an engine that reads and transforms HTML into sound and color – I found it absolutely fascinating... [emptydrome]
elevatormoods 9/4/03 Description:
scenes in an elevator in the city of Betaville (Flash)
Comments:
The "Elevator Mood" must be "staged specifically for the surveillance camera" and if the "elevator music playing in the background" isn't just right, the EMIC may reject the movie altogether. Romantic comedy and nostalgia are definitely out, but melodrama and tragedies are welcome, especially if it's Ray Conniff or Montovani playing to the vignette in question. Okay, so I'm not sure if the EMIC is really accepting submissions but in the city of Betaville, I guess anything is possible. What I do know is the showcased moods are wonderful little reality movies – this entertaining site is cool, smooth sailing to the top floor...
35togo 9/2/03 Description:
daily sights and sounds from Taiwan and other parts of Asia
Comments:
Clark MacLeod says something interesting about his site. "It's still a child but is growing and will someday be all that I planned it to be." I'm wondering if sound files are a part of his plan that's he's not yet implemented, but wants to in the long run. "This is all about being a witness to interesting visual and auditory events." Intriguing potential in my mind, but for now, the visuals are quite enough, thank you. Clark lives in Taiwan and likes "to look around corners" in his travels and carries a Canon digital and a Lomo. The results are interesting and engaging, especially if you've never been to that part of the world...
mytinygarden.com 9/1/03 Description:
macro photography of insects (Flash)
Comments:
Jay's been giving his small garden some "urgent attention" with camera in hand. His site, which is literally full of bugs, features great macro photography. Not only that, but Jay's use of Flash to present his collection of shots is done quite well. Interesting information accompanies the photos and overall, this is one of the more engaging sites I've encountered in a while. Fly, walk, or crawl to get there, but do check it out!
