Description: my work, my days, my ramblings
Comments: "This is a collection of the bits and pieces that make me who I am and what I am." A Canadian citizen who's originally from Greece, Maria has been living and working in the UK for about 9 years. She's a web developer interested in design, standards, accessibility, and usability, but notes that good design can also be sexy and goodlooking. "I do NOT want to be rich, I just want to be happy." Maria likes her job, but the site is a personal thing, "not intended to promote anything or anyone..." An interesting blog, though some posts are greek 2 me, and some personal photo galleries (enjoy an afternoon walk from work), plus plans to eventually fill the Sandbox with "themes, wallpapers, screen savers and other useless bits and bobs..." Nice design too, with a choice of skins...

  • Frank Erler 11/23/05
    Description: personal photography gallery (Flash)
Comments: There's beautiful landscapes from Vancouver to Calcary and excellent People pics. Plus dozens of photos taken in Barcelona – streets, architecture, and people – a sweet collection of photographs...  [Linkage]

  • oniram . projection 11/21/05
Description: ambiguities of the moment (Flash)
Comments: I like the interface despite its tiny font size – for each of the graphic ideas, there's an interesting interplay between the image as a page background and the image itself, triggered by mouse movement. "Eternal virtuality." "Fluid ideas." "Projections." Abstract and visually stimulating...

  • Guitar Shred Show 11/20/05
Description: an animated guitar school where Mr. Fastfinger reveals the arts and secrets of heavy rock guitar to all (Flash)
Comments: "I am... Fastfinger. Welcome to my guitar extravaganza." I'm not at all surprised that the site reached the half-million visitors mark only 3-1/2 months after it launched. Inspired by other shredders like Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Steve Vai, just to name a few, Mr. Fastfinger will teach you to shred with the best of 'em. You can just sit back and watch him show off, but once you take his easy lessons, you'll be ready to go off to The Mountain of the Tapping Dwarves and pardon my French, jam yer ass off! It's Sunday – go have some fun with Mr. Fastfinger – and while you're there, give a tip of the hat to Mika who pulled it all off with such finesse...

  • Photos of László Tandi 11/19/05
Description: gallery of digital photos (Flash)
Comments: "I haven't learnt this, because I think it's not important. If you have ability to do something, you shouldn't learn about that..." Photography's been a favorite hobby for 18-year-old László for a few years and there's some gems in his gallery of 50 shots. He's also been a Flash web designer since 2003 (it shows in the interface). And there's more cool photos on his main site – a talented young guy...;~))

  • Walk/Shuffle 11/15/05
Description: paths into urban journey space
Comments: "The urban traveler is too often concerned only with destination, treating the journey itself as secondary." Emmet makes a good point. Think about it – you need to get from point A to point B and decide to listen to some of your favorite tunes on the way. Focused on getting there while "receding into the private world afforded by headphones and habitual music," you miss out on much of what the urban environment has to offer, frankly because you're not paying attention to it. What if you used your iPod (or any device with similar capability) to receive random audio instructions (such as "turn left, then turn right" or "take the second next left") instead? The same technology that you use to accomplish a feeling of control over your environment can also be used as a means to relinquish that control to the environment itself. End result? You interact with the urban space instead of intentionally closing it out. Besides a great concept, the photos (or visual recordings) taken by various walkers in different cities are a treat.  [Space and Culture]

  • andio.net 11/14/05
Description: personal playground of Andreas Ortner
Comments: His personal playground has been online since 2002, relaunched on November 1st with a super-clean, accessible design, and though a bit light on content at the moment, what's there already certainly has me interested in what's coming.

  • skinnybuzzard 11/13/05
Description: day to day images posted as and when I want
Comments: People make most interesting photo subjects, whether portrayed as bluntly real or in more abstract ways. Off course, the impact of any photo goes beyond its subject – what one sees through his or her eye is the other half of the magic. And just look what Paul sees in the sky! Online for just over a year, today's pick provides some amazing day to day views of one guy's world...

  • keasone.de™ 11/12/05
Description: photography, graphic-graffiti, and motion works from design student Alexander Hahn (Flash)
Comments: "Now I'm in love with photography, computers and my girl!" Alexander Hahn started dabbling in graffiti 10 years ago when he was 13 and is currently studying graphic design at the Braunschweig School of Art in Germany. If you want a glimpse of this young man's personality, his short film me, myself and i will do it. His photography is just as colorful – great Holgas, long-exposures, and portraits! And that graffiti thing I mentioned sure turned in to something special – "It gotta have style... that's all!"

  • present imperfect 11/11/05
Description: photos detailing the lives of fictional people doing fictional things in fictional places, at fictional times
Comments: "Your inability to distinguish between carefully staged (yet subtly rubbish looking) photos and what has actually occurred is something between you and your therapist/parole officer/imaginary friend." Claiming it's all fictional, Jan gives me something to think about. What's very real in the world, right there in front of us, is actually what each of it perceives it to be in our own imaginations. Or something like that. Anyway, I've been following both of Jan's blogs for quite sometime now, and today's pick is the one devoted to play. Based in Tokyo, his work for Nokia Research inspires him so much that he's dedicated the other blog to reflecting on related topics, though not in a promotional way – it's about his own interest in the future of technology. The connection between that blog and the one devoted to play is that Jan travels a lot in connection with work and gets to spend his time off in places all over the world (I counted 14 countries). And those "fictional" pictures are very real, thank you – now, excuse me, I got things to do today...;~))

  • phatterism 11/9/05
Description: created by luis santi jr. (Flash)
Comments: This has got to be one of the most creatively clever personal sites I've seen. Watch Luis write out his journal entries for you and enjoy some of his personal photolism as he holds up each pic for you to see. And then, do check out what really matters – "...above all, being happy with who you are." It's nice coming across something so totally different...;~))  [High Floater]

  • Hong Kong Photography 11/8/05
Description: collection of favourite photographs from Hong Kong (Flash)
Comments: A few years after he was born in London, Nic's family moved to Hong Kong and lived there for 16 years. Though he's now living in Colorado, he still thinks of Hong Kong as home. "That's where I grew up and that's where I want to get back to." In the meantime, the website provides a means for Nic to revisit his "wonderful memories" of Hong Kong, and to share them with others – a beautiful collection of images and attractive site design in my opinion. As Nic says, "Enjoy."

  • International Corporation of Lost Structures 11/7/05
Description: still trying to connect you to our 9th-dimensional architectural space
Comments: "ICOLS loves you." In all the years I've been doing this coolstop thing, I don't think I've ever worked so hard (and enjoyed it so much) trying to come up with a simple description for today's pick. After about 2 hours exploring countless pages, I finally settled for something said in a truly amusing .mp3 linked on Founder and Director Suzanne Treister's bio page. She founded the corporation back in 2000. Did I just say corporation? When's the last time you remember me reviewing a corporation's website? Okay, so it's a corporation, but not just any corporation. Where else you gonna find a Department of Revolutionary Nostalgia, a Local Unit of Missing Links, and an International Department of Local Aesthetics? Among the long list of staff, you'll find a Voodoo Therapist, Tea Person, Psychic Architect, and Guilt Adjuster. You'll also find an assortment of artworks and deep thoughts and even a picture of the office each person occupies. A little activism and art plus accounts of organizational events all over the world – total entertainment for the easily amused, yet ample fodder for those who like to think...;~))

  • Design Detector 11/6/05
Description: web design and other areas of personal interest
Comments: If you ever wondered what a house would look like built entirely with CSS, here ya go. That's just one of Chris' many code demos. You might recall seeing his CSS Pencils early last year. Besides the interesting demos and a number of articles related to web design, Chris also presents what he calls his "amateur photography and artwork" – cool stuff, including wallpapers and The September Project...

  • PHOTOMO 11/5/05
    Description: almost-daily photographic sketchbook
Comments: Born in Japan, living in San Diego, and the latest pics are from Belgium. Tomo loves to travel. A red bench in Amsterdam. Wow! Tomo calls the site "a place to exercise to see things differently." Superb photography taken with various cool camerasand you simply must click on frogs...;~))

  • Socksoff.co.uk 11/3/05
Description: a personal, non-commercial wallpaper links resource
Comments: Today's pick "first went live on 12th June 2004 with just a small collection of links, and has grown into what it is today, still a small collection of links..." Of course, there's only so many good desktop wallpaper sites on the web, so 280 links is actually not that small a number. Add to it the fact that the nice person behind the site is "trying to keep the resource links pop-up free to make surfing more enjoyable than annoying." That scores big points in my book, thank you. There's also a growing section of over 60 downloadable desktops gathered from various free stock photo sites, and some of them are real beauties...

  • BigGuo.Com 11/2/05
Description: personal photos, music, and studies (Flash)
Comments: On one hand, 25-year old Yang Guo is a scientist engaged in physics-related study and research. He includes a Research section on the site, realizing "most of you will not be interested." On the other hand, there's the Leisure section where Big Guo shares other personal passions – photography, music, and Flash – the part I really like. Of course, if semiconductors and showerhead reactors are among your interests, you'll probably find both sections equally cool...;~))
