  • Human Flower Project 10/31/04
Description: an international newsgroup, photo album and discussion of how people live through flowers
Comments: "Coming from a background in sociology, literature, and journalism, my primary flower interests run along those lines." Author Julie Ardery says we're living "alongside life in many forms different from ourselves" and created the site to share "observations, photos or stories about how the lives of people and flowers intersect." There's posts in a variety of categories, from Art & Media and Ecology to Travel and Religious Rituals, all related to flowers. The site is new, but it looks like a community is already forming – a growing niche weblog for enthusiasts...;~))  [Ambiguous #]

  • Concepto Urbano 10/30/04
Description: a virtual space within the cybernetic world - illustrations and digital images
Comments: "Each one of these images is a reflection of this senseless world of routine in which we live." Emerson's illustrations and art grab me – original and colorful! "Weird Creatures From a Strange World" is, well, just what it says, and some of the stuff in the "Psychohazard Project" is downright odd. I'm not at all surprised to have found this talented artist among the participants at Urban Collective...;~))

  • stenkat 10/29/04
Description: graphism, sketchz, photography, and web+animation (Flash)
Comments: I'm not crazy about the browser window being forced to fill my larger desktop, especially when a site fits just fine in my "normal window" size of 1024x768 (just a personal preference). But I am crazy about the dozens of graphisms and sketchz showcased in Stenkat's portfolio (along with some artsy photos and other works) and really like the site's style and Flash interface. And I just love those 6 kitty pics you'll hopefully find when you visit today's pick – maow...;~))

  • fourteen places to eat 10/27/04
Description: a visual diary of life in a small town
Comments: "Walkerton was the last place I ever thought I would move back to." It's a small town with a population of around 3,000. Beautiful surroundings and real people. And it's got 14 restaurants, about which Kay says, "I imagine I'll photograph all of them before this project is complete." Daily life in a small town...  [sidesh0w.com: sideblog]

  • every program has its bugs 10/26/04
Description: graphic arts and animation (Flash)
Comments: Like several other picks earlier this month, otsland (10/14/04) and 2ddepot:Say Ximo (10/4/04), today's best of the cool has a little pixel character you move around with the arrow keys to get to the content. In the case of today's pick, the little pixelguy finds various tasty artworks, both Flash and static. The interface is a little tricky but there's helpful info on how to navigate. As with the other mentioned sites, I'm sharing this one mainly for the fun of it (plus the cool graphics) – enjoy!  [vizualz]

  • something normal 10/23/04
Description: making complete sense since 1999
Comments: "I've been writing an online journal since 1999, before it was cool. So, if you think I'm boring now, there are 5 years of boring entries in the archives." 25-year-old Ellie just finished a drastic redesign, tableless CSS with standards in mind, and I really like it. "Music is in my head all the time," she says, and one of the side features is normal radio. Ellie shares a few songs she likes, broadcasting to a limited number of listeners "when the urge strikes." There's also photos and desktops. All-in-all, a well-designed and interesting personal space. And btw, though I'm considerably older than Ellie, I'm still figuring myself out too – that's just something normal...;~))  [00033.net]

  • oh, cameras are macho 10/20/04
Description: photos from my travels – planning to post more photos that document my daily life & surroundings
Comments: Today's pick apparently has been online for just over a week. There's already 18 posts of pictures from Allison's travels and the plan is to post more photos that "document daily life" as the site grows. After seeing this and this, I'd say this site is one to watch...

  • Njoi CoLab 10/19/04
Description: a collection of images from eight designers based in Helsinki, Finland
Comments: Today's pick is a simple page of small square images, each leading to several other pics in its own array.  As minimal as it gets, but oh-so-tasty.  Based in Helsinki, a group of eight designers is behind the assortment of photos, graphic designs, and illustrations.  Enjoy some visual fun and remember to "check for updates, peaches!"  [Lounge72 #]

  • Pandora 10/15/04
    Description: a photo album (Flash)
Comments: A dozen flashing dots on the world map lead to series of photos from the corresponding countries.  Shots from virtually all of Europe plus Laos and Thailand, presented via a quiet, smooth Flash interface.  Beautiful scenic shots, uncommon portraits, and cool street photography throughout.  Some color, some b&w, all very nice...

  • otsland 10/14/04
Description: simply a place to go and get lost for a short period of time (Flash)
Comments: Today's pick is fun on the same level as Ximo (see 10/4/04) – move the cute pixel character around the room, or to other rooms and see what you find.  It's also a work in progress and though it hasn't been updated in a while, Ots says more is in the works.  I'll say no more, 'cause it's more fun to explore...;~))

  • odd wall 10/13/04
Description: get ready - graffiti art collection
Comments: "The surprise upside to looking for an apartment is the chance to walk down new streets!"  Graffiti.  Find your way to "the makers" – a long list of artists and their colorful art on walls – some of the best around, period.  Then check out "eureka" for newer stuff (by month).  Yeah, baby!  [thespot]

  • apocketwatchplum 10/12/04
Description: now with pixels, pictures practically spew out of the camera
Comments: APatrick put together a gallery of odd photos at FILE, which certainly fits the magazine's unexpected photography tagline.  It's real trash and "something to contemplate."  Today's pick, APatrick's own site, features 3 collections of photos and he describes it as "a great alternative to the daily work."  He's a working photographer but this is his personal stuff.  There's plenty of cool shots – I really like the wideWorld collection.  If I understand correctly, APatrick works mainly with film on the job, but digital has a lot to do with the fun he's having when he's not working...

  • www.nikkki.net 10/11/04
Description: drawings + paintings by nikolaus baumgarten
Comments: The collection of sketches, paintings, and digital art is extraordinary.  Just my opinion.  It's original art.  A real collaborative gem (Shockwave) linked at What Do I Know - Enjoying was my entrypoint.  Thankful...

  • The Free Words Project 10/10/04
Description: Copies of a free book are placed in bookstores and libraries creating an art situation that infiltrates public and commercial space – what someone does when they come across a copy is up to them.
Comments: If you're on the street and come across the hot pink sticker that identifies the project, look for the nearest bookstore or library and you just may find one or more of the 3,000 copies of a free book distributed throughout the U.S. and a dozen other countries by volunteers.  If you do find one, take it and do what you like with it – its 13,000 words are in the public domain.  To artist Sal Randolph (who's a poet and DJ too), the book FREE WORDS is an art object infiltrating public and commercial space and each book will end up having its own unique story.  Personally, if I found one of the books, I'd want to take it home and add some of my own words to it, then return it to the shelf I found it on.  Others may want to do something entirely different, like just keep it or maybe doodle on it and pass it along to a friend.  The site shares sightings & stories plus many "links to free culture."  You can also read the book online or download a copy.  Though the book's content is described as a list of words, it seems more a stream of words to me – in either case, the words belong to everyone and the project opens up new ways to share them...

  • EXP 10/8/04
    Description: a visual journal
Comments: Jose shoots digital because "film is too expensive and takes too long" but often finds himself "trying to emulate the look of film."  So the images "are rarely posted straight from the camera" – he likes to "screw'em up a bit."  And most of the shots in his visual journal are fresh, "created within 3 days of being posted."  Jose says that forces him "to get out there and shoot."  [Peoplesignage – interesting points of view – I like what he sees...;~))

  • Encore Magazine 10/7/04
Description: offers first class artists the opportunity to present themselves and their work (Flash) (some mature content)
Comments: While we're exploring online magazines, this one seems a bit more commercial and overtly promotional than typical coolstop fare (its producer is sponsored by Sony Ericsson® and Diesel® no less) and claims it "establishes a whole new and unique experience in the way the Internet is used for presenting magazines and advertising."  Well.  Online magazines, many using Flash, have been around for years now folks and there's some great ones out there.  So why did I pick this one?  Because it's one of the very best I've seen in terms of design and layout – it truly has the look and feel of a real magazine and first class visuals, dazzling enough to say it is a unique experience – now that's new!

  • acetone magazine 10/6/04
Description: quarterly magazine about music and other things we like
Comments: From Spain, today's pick is a multilingual, quarterly magazine focusing on "music and other things..."  The current issue (#6) features 4 different musicians/bands and includes in-depth reviews, some with interviews and accented with beautiful visuals.  More interesting stuff in the last issue too, including a quite detailed look at IdealWord.org, (see 3/17/04) – excellent, and of course, more music's covered in that issue as well.  Tasty site design and great content...  [surfstation]

  • 2ddepot: Say Ximo 10/4/04
Description: an experimental, interactive Flash project in progress
Comments: Though it's still very much a work in progress, I couldn't help but to spend time guiding little Ximo through the several rooms that are already in place.  The Saloncito has a TV with a games console attached and, on another corner table, a telephone and a "research point" where Ximo can gather a few documents for you.  The latest news says the telephone now works.  Out in the Entrada, there's the front door of the house though Ximo's not quite ready to go outside yet.  But he can go into the Cocinita where several appliances and other things just might be functioning soon.  Won't say too much more 'cept that it's fun to explore and it should be interesting to see what it all turns into...;~))

  • Vera-Icon 10/2/04
Description: photography of Veronica Chojnacki (Flash)
Comments: "The name Veronica comes from Vera Icon, she is the Patron Saint of Photography."  And Veronica Chojnacki is the photographer behind 4 galleries of musicians-in-action you'll find at today's pick.  Beck, The Donnas, Dave Nabarro, and The Used, to name a few – I like the interface too.  Enjoy...
