  • Honey Eat Your Salad 9/30/06
Description: a non-profit online magazine filled with talented young blood
Comments: When I first saw the site in April, it was more a diary-like presentation of works from various artists. Since then, it's evolved into an online magazine with 2 issues already under its belt – featuring young blood and full of astonishing photography and other visual art...

  • Shadowtones.net 9/29/06
Description: analog photography by Oxana Diakonashvili
Comments: Continuing along yesterday's webpath, thanks to Jonathan's tasty linklist, today's pick showcases the works of "an amateur photographer living in St. Petersburg, Russia" who shoots only with film. Extraordinary black & white photos! And a links page too...;~))

  • Diary of a Superfluous Man 9/28/06
    Description: photography by Jonathan Jaynes
Comments: On her previous blog a few years back, Anne came up with the idea of invisible threads existing on the web, based on something Herman Melville said a long time ago: "We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results." Today's pick came from a unique webpath starting here and ending at Anne's site – a sort of inspirational circle, or something like that. Anyway, on to today's pick. "I am not attempting to freeze a moment in time with these photographs. I have no desire to identify and catalog important moments or scenes of beauty. My photography is emotional; it communicates my intense feelings, life experiences and secret desires." So says Jonathan, the guy behind the site. And when I saw a certain photograph, I realized those invisible threads often lead to magical things...;~))  [Ample Sanity < Absolutely Nothing < Weekly Shot < coolstop]

  • Sour Sightings 9/27/06
Description: the continual travel log of the Orange Sour
Comments: Though the Octobot tried to discourage him from leaving, the Orange Sour was determined to leave the artist's studio to see the world. Oddly enough, his first stop was at Google's world headquarters. He encountered some other Sours out there as he continued on the road, eventually making it all the way to New Orleans. Though the Orange Sour's whereabouts are unknown at the moment, I've got a feeling we ain't seen the last of him. BTW, your cursor won't tell you, but the pictures on the main page are clickable...

  • WeeklyShot 9/25/06
Description: new kind of group photoblog and photo challenge
Comments: It went online early this year and its current theme, Urban Decay already has photos from 113 different photographers though the deadline isn't until Thursday – there's some truly amazing images. It's a weekly thing that started back in February, so there's 32 other themes in the archives (just like clockwork). Kudos to L. Brandon Stone for another great project – he's also the creator of Photoblogs.org, one of my favorite resources, thank you!  [Absolutely Nothing]

  • Blueeyes Magazine 9/23/06
Description: devoted to excellence in documentary photography from around the world
Comments: An odd coincidence – the fine art photographer behind yesterday's pick just happens to be one of the features in this online magazine's current issue. Saying it "exists to give a home to projects that examine social, political, and environmental issues around the world" and that it's "a movement against negative trends in photojournalism," the magazine tries to "champion unpublished and unheralded work from mainly younger photographers." Online since 2003 with some amazing documentary photography in the archives – nice site design too... (pleasantly rediscovered via the Magazine Stand at Ample Sanity, a Blortal, thank you)

  • Almost Naked 9/22/06
Description: images exploring the complexity of almost nakedness, as it is expressed both emotionally and physically
Comments: "The goal of this project is to raise the question about human nature, about emotions, feelings, desire, instinct and identity, to reveal things that you can feel..." Perhaps it's Shen Wei's curiosity about people and their identity that make the photographs so powerful. Make your own discoveries and judgments of the strangers encountered and captured over the last 3 years – fascinating portraits...  [Pixelsurgeon]

  • Photoblog.hu 9/21/06
Description: a visual diary from Hungary by Ervin Sperla
Comments: Been holding this pick in my back pocket for too long now. Ervin calls the site "a nifty way to justify always having my camera with me and foist the results on the unsuspecting public." That's a good thing 'cause his photos from home in Budapest are wonderful. And he's traveled the world too...;~))

  • Vectorpark 9/20/06
Description: gallery of interactive microscosms (Flash)
Comments: Call me easily amused but I find a trio of eggs following my mouse movements on their bicycles highly entertaining. Amazing Flash animation. Have fun exploring the various interactive microcosms you'll find here...

  • oh you! 9/19/06
Description: website of a 22-year-old designer living in Sydney
Comments: What personality! Seems her new site layout just landed her a new job and reading her upbeat post about it left me happy for a total stranger.
I have a job I love, I work with people I dig, I have a cool boss, I have a boyfriend with a belly button that my index fingers have access to 80% of the time and, I have a company email address! All is good in my world!
The site's been online for 3 years and there's a lot more amusing content besides that most recent post. "I saw the light today. When I finally put my hoodie on the right way." Heehee...

  • mi babilonia 9/18/06
Description: a site about myself (Flash)
Comments: "About death, love, pain, space and distance." There's no excuses as Indira shares her works from 2004. Taken back by an interactive piece called pAnic. "The soft shivering of being left alone..."  [Body Collector]

  • SeeMusic Project 9/17/06
Description: an unusual and imaginative way of visualising music (Flash)
Comments: The project attempts to explain "the history of western classical music since ancient Greece through symbol and colour." Each visualisation is based "in the colour theory and ideas" of the historical period in which the musical work originated. You'll need Flash, a broadband connection, and some patience to enjoy the visualisations (and music), but it's all quite interesting, including the in-depth Theory section.

  • Finlandia 9/16/06
Description: handmade photography - images from the north
Comments: A chilling selfportrait led me to Zei Andrei Meriae's handmade photography. Beautiful Finnish landscapes and portraits. And a not-so-pretty, but thought-provoking hog...;~))

  • i am a camera 9/15/06
    Description: visual diary and scrapbook
Comments: "It is a collection of images that point to things I do, see and find interesting." An image like this, one of Daniel's selected shots, tells me passion powers his creativity...

  • Neave.tv 9/14/06
Description: an experimental use of video over the web (Flash)
Comments: "Creativity in a telly stylee." It's an experiment in Flash and done quite well. Enjoy the show...;~))  [Basement.org]

  • photoROK 9/13/06
    Description: photos by David Luo
Comments: "It's been a lot of fun and the more I learn, the more I realize how much I have to learn." David's snapped 1000's of photos over the last year or so and hopes the photoblog will be a good history of what he's learning. Working to improve in "capturing the human element" and "more effective use of lighting" among other things, David's archives certainly show he's hardly clueless...;~))

  • thomas keeley 9/12/06
    Description: odd design concepts
Comments: Thomas Keeley certainly has some creative vision as to how everyday things might be modified a bit to better serve their purpose. Or something like that – love the hair brush...;~))  [BANTER®]

  • Image 72 9/11/06
    Description: little collection of photos
Comments: Just launched in July, Kenneth says it's not meant to be a photographic diary. Rather, it's a small collection, updated when he has time. And though it currently has just 13 shots posted, every one is superb (in my opinion) – like a field of dreams or the beach....

  • Arriba 9/10/06
Description: online design, photography, and illustration magazine
Comments: >||||.> >||||.> >||||.> They say they're "the brightest and wildest" you've seen, featuring "the best works of the visual artists from different ends of the world!" And they won't leave you unimpressed. 4 issues of great visual art in zipped up .pdf format – sweet!  [Brain Twisting]

  • pressfotografen.com 9/9/06
    Description: photographer Bonny Håkansson (Flash)
Comments: The works of a Swedish press photographer whose stories come from Angola and the Ukraine and points in-between. And Bonny's photos include some phenomenal portaits – like Little Richard and Elton John for starters...;~))  [fod]

  • Urban Landscapes 9/8/06
Description: intended to feature the best in photography and critical writing on the urban landscape from around the world
Comments: "The enduring power of photography lies in the acceptance of its images as credible documentary records with enduring archival validity." Mike Seaborne, on of the site's creators, says the challenge is to capture not only the "physical manifestations" of continuous changes to the urban landscape, but to also "make visible the underlying social and cultural forces which ultimately determine their form and meaning." There's currently 7 different photographers featured – some great visual and textual content here...

  • the Broadband Journal 9/7/06
Description: the hi-speed adventures of the joneses (Flash)
Comments: Something a little different today. "With broadband, you can get a lot of things you really need, and more things you don't, but really want." That's just one of the messages the government is sending as it pushes for homes and businesses (and schools) in Wales to get connected. The site shares the hi-speed adventures of a fictional family, targeted somewhat to the newbies among us (or so it seems). Oddly entertaining to say the least. Damn! You can even shop online if ya got broadband...;~))  [Mowsnet]

  • Binary Bonsai 9/6/06
Description: a weblog run by the earthling Michael Heilemann
Comments: "Half humans, half things." He started the site back in 2001 with something different in mind but "somewhere along the line it took a wrong turn..." It's been Michael Heilemann's "fully fledged blog" since 2003 (you might recognize the name from his well-known WordPress theme). If you're into games and/or movies, you'll especially enjoy the content here. There's occasional photos and podcasts too. Some cool design touches including a bit of AJAX...

  • Jay Parkinson 9/5/06
    Description: photography
Comments: "A series of aspiring Baltimore models taken in their own living spaces." An amazing study of human beings in my opinion (more in the portraits).  [BunkerPhotos]

  • c.dric.be/gium 9/4/06
Description: a crossing between a blog and a collage book
Comments: "Rebooted every other week." On one hand, it's kinda like a blog. The current issue has links under inspiration and typography, while the previous issue featured some outstanding collage pointers. On the other hand, it's an outlet for Cédric's own visual creativity. Just launched in July and lookin' good...

  • Fotoblog Stefan Simon 9/3/06
Description: personal photoblog from Duisburg, Germany
Comments: There's something about Stefan's fblog design that makes perfect sense to me. The photo's at the top of the page instead of in the middle where scrolling might be more necessary. Simple and brilliant choice and I'm thinking, "why didn't I think of that?" Seriously though, it's the photos – like flags in the window or simple pipes in front of a brick wall that make for happy browsin'...;~))

  • Nuwen.Com 9/2/06
    Description: personal weblog
Comments: "It’s about time for a change of scenery around here." It's Rikkye's new Aquamarine design, which just went online yesterday, I really like. Though some text could use more contrast, the overall site design is rather striking in my opinion...  [roxlu < crossmind]

  • Ray Osuna Photography 9/1/06
Description: gallery of retouched works (Flash) (mature content)
Comments: Photography (which is outstanding in itself) is just the beginning of Ray Osuna's radical visual art. Incredible retouching skills...  [Body Collector]
