  • hoard magazine 2/28/05
Description: for and about art, people, ideas and other-culture (some mature content)
Comments: Today's pick was born in December, 2000, and "is made possible by a network of friends, artists, thinkers, and good people." The current issue features some stunning photography plus several interviews and the archive is full of creative goodies. While you're there, do check out Hoard Cinema too – independent short films – the ones I've watched so far are just great. A digital magazine that's definitely on the secret treasure side of things... (some mature content)

  • m-city 2/27/05
Description: playing with the form and space of the city
Comments: There's about a 100 different pieces, in the form of stencils, that go into making an atwork of the virtual city – buildings, people, infrastructure, and heros. The artworks show up in real city spaces as murals and stickers, etc. Nice assortment of photos of various projects completed – cool street art. And you can use the site's online konstruktor to create your own piece for the gallery – fascinating....  [Swikiri]

  • www.visualdiaries.com 2/26/05
    Description: photo essays
Comments: There's several dozen photo essays in the archives going back to 2000, done by Cary Conover, the site's editor, and a number of other photographers. The most recent, the social life, is all black & white – superb people pics (not to mention a few critters) in a variety of settings – very real. I can say the same for the commonplace essay. Leisa Thompson's barns is another one I like – "all i know is that when i step foot inside i am consumed with an overwhelming sense of peace."

  • Promenade the Puzzle 2/25/05
Description: a short film written, designed, and directed by Michele D'Auria with music by PFM (Flash)
Comments: You may want to crank your volume up a notch or two to enjoy today's pick to the max. Inpired by music, it's a short animated film I found totally entertaining – hopefully, you'll enjoy it as much as I did...  [Interney Tiny Awards]

  • Everyday Okay 2/21/05
Description: short film, photos, and music (Flash)
Comments: "Take a trip across the country side." It's an odd trip to say the least – a short film called "The Money" – visually impressive with a soundtrack to match. There's more music to listen to from Joel's Beauchamp Falls project. Add a few hundred artsy photos, many of them Lomos, and you realize that creative spaces like today's pick don't come along everyday...  [liquidlink]

  • relapsed.net 2/16/05
Description: an ongoing new media project investigating the potential of the website as fine arts object (Flash)
Comments: I mentioned Ryan's new media project last month when reviewing StreetMemes, where he handles the editorial function. His own site caught my attention and I'd meaning to get back to it. Yesterday, a list of locative media links, found via urbanity@del.icio.us, led me right back to Ryan's Inclusive Shopdrop Directory. He's one of a number of people engaged in reverse shoplifting – similar to The Free Words Project (see 10/10/04), the shopdroppers add something to merchants' shelves, "creating an art situation" in an otherwise commercial space. Ryan's directory leads to other web projects related to the concept and includes several of his own adventures in the art form. Interesting stuff, but do go in the front door so you don't miss Ryan's great photos...

  • The Monkey Nuts 2/15/05
Description: an inside look into illustrator James Marr's mind
Comments: "Found a load of old illustrations in the depths of my hard drive, these were my first attemps at doing some illustrations." If monsters are your thing (as they are James'), you could start here. Not to worry – the iWanNAgOhoMe will get you to the main page, where you'll find more monsters or as he calls them, "weird looking people with little comments on the side." You'll also find "loads of messages" from the site's stars, the "wonderful looking monkey nuts." A doodler extraordinaire...;~))  [Urban Collective]

  • a softer world 2/14/05
Description: a new comic every Friday
Comments: "When his mother died, I suggested we take a vacation, to get away. We got cable instead." These are comics of different kind – more than amusing. Emily, who "smiles at all the right times" and Joey, who "misses his best friends from when he was little" and comes slightly overqualified, team up to serve a new installment every Friday. Say cheese...;~))

  • Resherry 2/13/05
Description: Mori's illustration gallery, featuring Redheaded Sherry
Comments: The star of showcase is a cute, little red fox named Redheaded Sherry, created by Japanese illustrator Mori. At least, I think it's a fox. The colorful character is the subject of various print projects and other artworks, and there's a bunch of cool wallpapers too. Have fun...;~))

  • Express Train 2/12/05
Description: what I see every day commuting to and from work
Comments: "This is the story of my daily commute on the New York City Subway. Brooklyn to Grand Central Station, 5 days a week, twice a day. I post a new image every evening from that days commute." It's just 6 miles between point A and point B, but it takes "three trains, 11 stops, and 45 minutes each way." A delightful setting to document, day after day, with one's camera. I'm thinkin' I need to get to NYC one of these days – it's been so many years since I've been on the Subway. And I'm thinkin' of Chicagoland too, where I lived for over 20 years, and that daily commute from the burbs to The Windy. A routine I miss. The trains – the people on them – life in real-time. Thanks for the inspiration Travis...

  • Pinkash 2/11/05
    Description: illustration and design (Flash)
Comments: From Singapore, the tasty illustrations and designs of young Charlene Tay. Her showcase is divided into Love and Hate sections, which could be named Play and Work instead (if I get it, that is). It's all good stuff though the Love is what I found most enjoyable – original style, cool vectors, and color within...;~))  [links, the cesspool < linkpool]

  • terminus 1525 2/9/05
Description: an open space for emerging creators (Flash)
Comments: Presented by the Department of Canadian Heritage, it bills itself as "a platform for soon-to-be-discovered creative voices." It lives "on the web and on the street" sharing the works of Canada's "young emerging artists." Featured interviews, an archive of exhibits, and online studios of roughly 50 visual artists, plus Radio Terminus, featuring the works of various audio creators. Happy browsin'...;~))  [linkdup]

  • Museo Vintage 2/8/05
Description: gallery of vintage images (Flash)
Comments: Similar to another site reviewed last year, today's pick looks at Columbian popular culture in a unique way. Vintage images. The big gallery of images spanning the timeline from 1800 to 1999 is simply excellent...;~))  [joystick]

  • The Life Terrestrial 2/7/05
    Description: This is an adventure.
Comments: Today's pick has a few things in common with Saturday's (see review). Something I failed to mention on Saturday is that Matthew developed a WordPress theme – it just so happens that Alex, the guy behind today's pick, used Matthew's theme to beautify his site as well. Small world here on the web. The other thing's the two blogs have in common is the geeky factor. While Matthew calls himself a MacGeek, Alex calls himself a "Linux and Mac Zealot." He started the blog just last month and if geeky and techy appeal to you, it's one to watch. And though music doesn't seem to have appeared as a topic yet, I wouldn't be surprised if it does with time...;~))

  • kyo suayan 2/6/05
Description: personal blog and photogalleries of kyo suayan, plus pixelwacko, the photoblog
Comments: A visit to the water's edge. Or an amazing view of the lake. That's before you go pixelwacko with form, composition, atmosphere, and beauty, to say the least...

  • somefoolwitha dot com 2/5/05
Description: This is a weblog, or blog for me, Matthew. I live in Southsea, Hampshire, UK.
Comments: According to Matthew, a "a MacGeek of many years" living in the UK, "somefoolwitha dot com seems to roll [off] the tongue and pretty much encompasses my attitude [about] the general rubbish I spout onto this virtual journal." Trust me when I say he's not the only fool with a dot com – some of us fools have a whole bunch of 'em. A little digging led me to his of unusual desktop images. The Bizzare Bizzar category has turned me into an interested subscriber. And I'm definitely with Matthew on supporting FireFox. Geeky. Varied. Amusing in spots. Nice blog design. And a bonus. Rubbish? Not at all...;~))  [noscope]

  • unscared.net 2/4/05
Description: anti stress lifestyle design magazine
Comments: Though the first issue, released November, 2004, is called The Music Issue, it's "not accompanied by a single mp3 file." The word is that will change with Unscared V2, to be released later this month. The current issue features "58 pages of high fever" in 5 chapters – big, tasty visuals and interesting content about music and lifestyle. There's an online preview version, though it's definitely worth downloading the .pdf version for maximum enjoyment...;~))  [robocore.]

  • Arty 2/2/05
Description: paintings, drawings, photos, and brushes
Comments: Besides Arty's original digital art, paintings, drawings, and photos, there's also some great free stock photos and a half-dozen downloadable brush sets for Photoshop. "Share the link not the file!!!" Fair enough if ya ask me – tasty stuff...;~))  [psx00@del.icio.us]

  • gluemeat 2/1/05
Description: among other things, a websclusive comic by Case Yorke
Comments: Case has another tasteful project he apparently started last year, but today's pick is the home of his websclusive comic, now in it's 4th year. 25 more strips and he will have hit comic #500. Since his characters are terminally cute and the strips, amusing, I'm just here to root him on as he nears his goal – go Case, go Case...;~))
