  • High Floater 8/31/05
Description: a directory of favorite sites (Flash)
Comments: "I hope the style and ambience makes you feel at ease," says the anonymous person behind today's pick, sharing almost 500 of his/her favorite sites. Cool Flash interface and beautiful screenshots. After spending over 2 hours there this morning and discovering some truly great examples of design excellence (and, in the process, revisiting several sites listed here), I've just got to share it with those of you seeking a little design inspiration – it'll probably do the trick...  [webbunker < robocore.]

  • Galerie | Mouvement 8/30/05
Description: art in a tent (Flash)
Comments: The artist's acts of personal expression take place in a 10'x10' workspace with numerous small works on its walls – a portable studio and gallery, if you will. Explore the beautiful things within the Galerie along with the separate exhibition of paintings (plus a short movie). Sitting in the middle of the woods somewhere seems ideal for this most unique tent (and artist).  [Hardrock Taxi < Maniackers < world-3000]

  • Core - no text magazine 8/29/05
Description: a free place of expression (Flash)
Comments: The first issue features no text and one work each from 10 different designers, illustrators, and photographers. You'll probably recognize some of the names. What appears at first to be a quick visual browse also leads to contributors' websites, so don't be surprised if you end up spending a lot more time than you thought you would...;~))  [Brain Twisting]

  • Night Photography by David Baldwin 8/28/05
Description: landscapes and architecture, often with an astronomical theme
Comments: "Standing in a dark landscape waiting for an exposure to finish gives you a lot of time to really look at your surroundings," says David Baldwin, who takes his night photographs "with mixed feelings of excitement and mystery, an awareness of beauty and exclusivity, and fear." For David, there's a big difference in colour and mood after sundown and taking long exposures on various film types leads to interesting things – "a different kind of photographic visualization." He's been interested in night photography since being "a schoolboy" and his collection includes shots taken over 20 years ago. There's some beautiful work here. And speaking of night photography, here's another such site reviewed last year...

  • SerioComic 8/27/05
    Description: photography by Mike Hudson
Comments: In late July, Mike announced a "change in the wind" in the last post to his old blog, which had been online since the beginning of 2002. "I’m not going to stop blogging, there’s just going to be a shift in focus." Today's pick is Mike's new blog with its emphasis on photography. "I get little or no inspiration from writing words for this website but a great deal from adding (and improving) my photography." I've got to say I was inspired by this pic from a few days ago. "How the simple objects hold the most fascination." Yep...  [Piepmatzel.de]

  • Photobooth.net 8/26/05
Description: a resource for "everything photobooth"
Comments: "In their heyday, photobooths dotted the landscape in five and dime stores, bus stations, and amusement parks from coast to coast." Things have changed as the world goes digital but these old-fashioned treasures "have made a modest comeback, finding safe haven in bars, restaurants, art galleries, and out-of-the-way amusement parks that haven't yet felt the digital pull." Today's pick, which started as a small project at another cool site (see cs review) is indeed on its way to becoming "the end-all be-all photobooth resource and community website." Locate photobooths throughout the U.S. and discover their place in art, movies, television, and print media. Or just enjoy viewing the gallery of submitted strips. A "comprehensive resource?" I'd say so...  [del.icio.us]

  • bitter pill 8/25/05
Description: a mass of incoherent writings and blatherings about nothing consequential or meaningful
Comments: Lord knows I've been looking for a way to accomplish such tasks – thank God for Google and their endless barrage of betas!
Google Text enables Google users to press letters on their keyboard, and those letters will then appear in a Google Text document. Users can string these letters together to form whole words, even complete sentences. Google says that users will be able to create entire paragraphs of words and sentences, and, for the advanced computer users, complete documents.
Still LOL! And isn't it amazing what some public figures will say and do on television? I've gotta tell you, these 2 most recent posts reminded me why I've been a faithful lurker at reader of Mark's blog for some time now. His archives go back to 2000 and I also enjoy his photos. And I especially enjoy clicking on pull until "ching...ching...ching..." appears. So I say to myself, if it works so well for me, perhaps it will for you as well...;~))

  • croyable daily 8/23/05
    Description: daily photolog
Comments: I've reviewed a lot of photoblogs, photologs, and photo journals, and to tell you the truth, it's becoming more and more difficult for me to write these puppies. Afterall, what makes a photo site unique, in most cases, is its collection of photos. Your seeing the pictures directly tells stories much better than I could. With that said, here's a few reasons for picking this one today. Decay. A seagull. M.M.. It's a daily thing...

  • Metro Bits 8/22/05
Description: some aspects of the world's subway systems
Comments: From Germany, an amazingly comprehensive "independent and non-profit website" focusing on Metro transit systems. The World Metro List compares over 150 systems. Another section looks at Metro Arts and Architecture with photos from almost 40 worldwide metro stations. And speaking of photos, don't miss Metros with a View. Add a big gallery of metro logos from around the world, plus other resources and information – it's all things metro. Kudos to M. Rohde for putting it all together...  [DWT < Itchy Robot]

  • IAMVERY.com 8/21/05
Description: home of the File Bucket, a project by Jay Hayes (Flash)
Comments: I've come across several other good PHP-driven file browsers, but what's different about Jay's File Bucket is its "outward appearance of flash and the heart of PHP." It's a cool interface in my opinion, but today's pick is also about the content – wallpapers, photos, experiments, and even some old work to laugh at. Jay's got some good stuff in his bucket...

  • justcurio.us 8/20/05
    Description: strangers helping strangers
Comments: "458,728 strangers have answered 98,229 questions" so far. Before you can seek the help of strangers, though, you'll have to answer one of the existing questions in the database. Then you can ask your own question. There's a few other simple rules (reasonable in my opinion) and users are given an easy way to help moderate content. An "anonymous question and answer system" – quite the cool diversion...;~))  [AbbyLikes@del.icio.us]

  • Hydrous³ 8/19/05
Description: personal website and photoblog of Ethan Trewhitt
Comments: "My camera rarely leaves my side, and when I'm not bothering my friends with the lens in their face, I'm shooting random macros of shiny objects I find interesting." There's three things I really like about Ethan's photoblog (besides all the interesting pics, that is). First, you can choose to view smaller, lower-bandwidth versions of all photos and your preference is stored in a session cookie – nice touch for users with slower connections. You also have a choice between light and dark page backgrounds. Finally, and I really like this – Ethan makes most of the photos available in desktop size. I should mention that the site's not only a photoblog – Ethan calls it a personal website and there's usually more content accompanying his Photo of the Day. Other things too, plus the hPhoto collection, going back to 2002...  [a photolog]

  • Intransient Photojournal 8/17/05
Description: Kemp and Jolayne Attwood's daily photo journal with Flash 'photo sampler'
Comments: "At its best, this photographic record serves the same purpose as scribbles on lined paper: documenting events, collecting impressions and sparking ideas. It is thinking out loud. We love to look back over these images because they're us; our life. We can't expect you to like them, but it's nice if you do – that's what makes the internet so cool." That's the message from Kemp and Jolayne on their About page. Their daily photo journal can be browsed very much like most such sites (photoblogs included) – use previous/next or browse by thumbnails in the monthly archive. Either way, you'll find a number of extraordinairy shots (in my opinion) going back to September, 2002. Then there's some unique bonuses to today's pick, like a number of special projects plus albums of photos taken in Japan (also found in the Archive). And finally, the coolest thing about the site is a brand new Sampler feature, driven by Flash – use the timeline, or better yet, choose a template and shuffle – I love it!  [room308@del.icio.us]

  • biosfear 8/16/05
    Description: snapshots, babble, and influence...
Comments: "I thought I'd try a new way of getting imagery and ideas online, so I've jumped on the blog format bandwagon," said Rob in late January. I'm not sure if the site existed in some form before that, but the current content, mostly visual, is a treat. If you're brave and don't might waiting a ton of images to load, you could go right to the snapshots and start scrolling. Or just go to one of the newer entries and work your way back one-at-a-time. Either way, I think you'll enjoy it. There's some interesting babble too – never know when you might need a recipe for Tofu Chowder...;~))  [Joystick]

  • [ ] as if to say 8/15/05
Description: a collection of photos taken with various 'bad cameras'
Comments: "Another shot everybody takes. Taking it, and waiting to see how it turned out, was most of the fun..." So it goes with toycameras and the person behind today's pick has a dozen different bad cameras at their disposal. Sorry, but I just love this stuff...;~))  [(Not) TWBexposed]

  • Visual art by Clara 8/14/05
Description: only my favourite hobbies... (Flash)
Comments: "My name is Clara and I live near Milano (Italy), in a small small town. I've been interested in visual arts for about ten years, with a particular interest in painting and photography." What you get is a gallery of beautiful images on various themes, some wallpapers, plus a second site, Clara's Photolife – excellent!  [PaginaInvalida < Brasil Inspired]

  • NID Gallery 8/13/05
Description: people and works from the Nagaoka Institute of Design (Flash)
Comments: On one side, a people filter. On the other, a works filter. Each is a wheel you can rotate with your mouse wheel or by simply clicking on the thumbnails. From the NID in Japan, the site features a big collection of architecture, craft object, media art, painting, and textile works of teachers and students. Outstanding interface (in my opinion) and even more impressive when it comes to its visual content...  [iBLOG]

  • yamasaki ko-ji. 8/12/05
Description: photos taken by a 'funcky crazy exciting man' in Japan
Comments: When Yamasaki updated the site to Vol. 2 at the beginning of July, he moved to larger photos, most of which fill the browser window perfectly at 1024x768. He's posted over 50 photos since then, with almost 400 more in the previous version. Much of his work is in black & white with a quite artistic graininess to it. From Japan, enjoy a really cool collection of photographs...;~))  [photobloggies]

  • the unseen video 8/11/05
Description: weather controlled, dynamic music video (Flash)
Comments: "Best seen with more than 3ghz cpu. Sorry about that, but this is the future." That's if you want to view the dynamic version of the music video in real-time. But if you have an older computer, there's still several static versions available for viewing, which give a good idea what it's all about. Based on the current weather forecast in your specific area, "additional animations of snow, rain or pollen and clouds" will appear along with the basic elements (with unique characteristics of their own, also affected by weather). In effect, the video you see on any given day will be one you've never seen before. And though the music remains the same, that's a good thing 'cause it feels pretty good...;~))  What Do I Know - Enjoying]

  • RCA | Communication Art and Design 2005 8/10/05
Description: works of the class of 2005 (Flash)
Comments: "My aim is to challenge set views and attitudes and make people think and ask questions" says Cecilia, one of members of the class. "When it comes to the image, my primary concern is the composition" say another student, Paul. The site features visual works by postgraduate CA&D students at the Royal College of Art in the UK – illustration, photography, paintings, and motion graphics from about 50 up-and-coming talents. Add the nicely done interface to the many things I think are cool about today's pick...

  • selfnonself.org 8/9/05
Description: gallery of photos taken in the US, China, and Malaysia (Flash)
Comments: For two days now, I've been wondering what I might say about Jess' photos. There's something special about them that I can't put into words. Malaysian alleys and forests. An astounding aerial view of an American city taken at night. In China, an odd sign – "no entry to tunnel by jumping off platform." Dark rooms with light pouring in through windows. Street scenes. Decaying walls. Indoor art spaces. A wonderful collection of 6x4 snapshots from someone with a most artistic eye, in my opinion anyway.

  • Itchy Robot! 8/8/05
Description: bringing a knife to a gunfight - group notes log plus photos of found typography
Comments: On one hand, it's "links to stuff, and like, you know, stuff" from a team of 9 Notes authors – a real assortment of stuff in its "dark, damp" and "dusty" archive. On the other hand, though, it's a big collection of photos around a theme, found typography, which sits one notch above cool in my opinion – amazing what Graham finds on the street. "So many letters, so little time." I really like the latest site design too.  (revisited thanks to DSGND)

  • A Thousand Words // Photography 8/7/05
Description: capturing life one photo at a time
Comments: "I currently live in Murrieta, CA, and take pictures of my surroundings on a semi-daily basis" says DV. It's been a hobby for just a few years but she could have fooled me. I particularly like the pictures filed under Architecture and Abstract – enjoy...  [links.sbpoet.com]

  • Streetzen 8/6/05
Description: a photoblog of pix made along the path
Comments: One never knows what they might encounter along the path. Today's pick has been online for less than a month and already has 50 captured moments in the archives. Mostly very real people caught candidly in black & white. The streets and its characters can be most intriguing, especially when captured so well...;~)  [No Traces]

  • Forget Magazine 8/5/05
Description: poetry, fiction, reporting and essays not found in mainstream media
Comments: "What we are really after: what we are really after in this publication is the publishing of material that is ignored in the mainstream press and the even the independent news. Anything that has reason and passion." In 2002, it was said that "every writer under 40 is aware of this site." Young writers. Canadian culture. Submissions "that pertain to the interaction, in Canada, between people will be considered the highest rate of priority (before first, if that is possible)." Launched back in February, 2001, there's almost 500 works in the archives (mostly words, some including interesting visual touches) – and don't miss the various About documents for entertaining insight into what makes this litzine tick...  [wood s lot]

  • Alex Jones | Photojournalist 8/4/05
    Description: collection of daily work
Comments: Currently the Editors' Choice at Photoblogs.org, today's pick comes from a photojournalist who works for a newspaper in McAllen, Texas. Alex Jones says "my photoblog is an outlet for me to display the photos that I think are the most important from any particular assignment." Amazing photographs from an obvious professional presented in a quiet, totally non-commercial setting – sweet!

  • DSGND 8/3/05
Description: think inside some else's box - sources of inspiration
Comments: "The quality of ideas can be measured by the quality of the ideas that influence them..." This small collection of tasty visual bookmarks encourages "thinking sideways" – it's all about the inspiration. There's some excellent sites among its best kept secrets. And you can also submit "your bright idea, your brilliant animation, high-concept art piece, or street level experiment" for possible inclusion...;~))

  • angulo 8/2/05
    Description: photography of Fernando Angulo
Comments: The photoblog archives go back to the beginning of this year – a real variety of both color and b&w – I love this shot (just one of many). What really drew me into Fernando's work, though, is his black and white photographic portfolio, "the result of a 6 year travel (back and forth) around Brazilian cities." There's 9 essays, or series, and they're all simply superb!  [Brasil Inspired]
