projecttree 12/31/05 Description:
photography, web development tutorials, and other projects
Comments:
"Primary reason for the making of this site was a desire for a meaningful web presence." I've encountered Mike's web articles several times recently, linked from sites I follow regularly. He provides an assortment of development-related tutorials "missing or inadequately covered elsewhere." Topics include XHTML and CSS and Javascript and the site's a fine example of super clean design and functionality in may opinion – "passed validation" is no surprise. His interest in web development in just part of the equation. "Photography trains a keen eye that listens to the environment and recognizes the elegance in the surroundings." I love his photos! In the albums, check out Color & Light before enjoying collections of shots from 5 different countries. And if taking in music at clubs is your thing, Mike's in New York and carries his camera with him when he goes out (yummy). Speaking of clubbing, I'm tickled Mike announced his newest project (pretty cool in itself) 'cause it prompted me to further explore projecttree – and here we are...;~))
La Casa del Fotografo 12/30/05 Description:
experimental photography project (Flash)
Comments:
Marco described it as "an experimental trip to learn basical concept of the roots of photography" when announcing the collaborative project at robocore. – what great vintage style! The house of photography has many rooms, each with its own little showcase of images and the site design is as tasty as the content. Though most of the textual content is in Italian (which I don't read very well), I still found my stroll through La Casa most enjoyable. You might want to check out the (538x700) link on the main page for Marco's portfolio nico as well...;~))
Art on the Net 12/29/05 Description:
a virtual space where artists join together in sharing their art with others on the Internet
Comments:
"Enjoy visiting artists studios and roaming the gallery rooms." Over 11 years ago, the site launched as a result of a barter between Lile, an artist, and a friend who was interested in one of her oil paintings. She got a free internet connection for a year out of the deal and soon launched art.net. Today, it houses the works of over 400 artists, presenting their works in a non-commercial setting (see the Manifesto). The design is somewhat old fashioned but the site's navigation is pretty good – more important, the content is remarkable (and vast). Here's a fun starting point... [zeroin]
SELFish 12/28/05 Description:
photo and video art of Giovanni Antignano (Flash)
Comments:
If the site consisted of Giovanni's Nightshift series of 15 photos and nothing more, it would probably still be today's pick – though surely a matter of personal taste, I just love his night shots. There's 4 other series of his artistic photography, plus a Videogallery of visual/aural artworks in itself quite special. View Wondering Tabla and Postcard to see what I mean. Gio's a member of the fish.tank art collective too. Have a tasty day...;~)) [Heavy Backpack]
JeremyDower.com 12/26/05 Description:
illustration and character design
Comments:
Jeremy's crazy mixed-up world includes the 2-headed salaryman figurine who would prefer you call them "graham" and erwin the baby carrot figurine who warns he's "a bad seed" – incredible characters especially when you mutate or disassemble them. There's plenty of other crazy characters to amuse you too... [zeroin]
Spread the Know 12/25/05 Description:
project to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and promote HIV testing (Flash)
Comments:
Today's pick is the product of a partnership between a giant entertainment media company and a leading non-profit health information and research organization – not what you typically find featured here at coolstop. But they're on an important mission and I find the way they're attempting to spread the know about HIV/AIDS most impressive. "Knowledge can spread faster than any disease." The site documents (through video clips) a recent event held in Philadelphia where an artist collective "painted a single piece of artwork that started small and gradually spread to encompass an entire city block" to help increase awareness. Users can create their own online graffiti, learn more the deadly disease, and even locate HIV testing facilities in their own areas. It's got hip hop style, a cool site design, and it's fun. If you want to reach the young, what better way to deliver the message? Spread the Know! [iBlog]
the VIEW 12/24/05 Description:
photos taken during the day-to-day adventures of Mikhail Wassmer
Comments:
From "a swiss-canadian living in switzerland longing for canada" comes glimpses of peace and serenity. Also within Mikhail's view are irresistible people and interesting things seen on the street. Though still completing the archives, there's currently photos from the last 3 months of his day to day adventures. A nice design touch too – the sidebar background color depends on the photo you're viewing, which will most likely be a photo you're also enjoying...;~))

through the lens, the enormity of the world seems manageable (Flash)
Comments:
"Photography is my crutch, my constant companion..." Besides some really cool content like industrial, night, and sky photos and tasty .mp3s playing in the background, I really like the Flash interface. "...that I keep coming back to whenever my vision blurs." [Ventilate]
Comadivision.com 12/22/05 Description:
a gathering of Polish designers who create in a variety of styles
Comments:
Though it's kind of late in the year to let you know about their 2005 Calendar, I've downloaded it for its great artworks by the 12 designers in the crew. There's 7 other visual projects in the exhibition – oh so tasty! [Ereoh.com < French'N'Fresh]
sex lies and fairy tales 12/21/05 Description:
re-interpreting classic fairy tales - visual narratives with a twist
Comments:
A trip to monkey land and a character named huff puff are part "a conversation... held primarily by a spontaneous glue" between Chiu and his friend Eeshaun this past summer. There's more parts to the collaboration adorned with incredible illustrations and animations – sympathetic visual language. It's an amazing project and just one from a long list that started back in 2001 with Chiu's twisted tales of Little Red Riding-Hood and Little Snow White, each with about a dozen still illustrations plus an interactive narrative done in Flash. Did I already say incredible? A lot to enjoy here...;~))
Spartan Dog Magazine 12/20/05 Description:
monthly magazine for dark contemporary art (Flash) (mature content)
Comments:
Today's pick went online in April with its first issue, aptly named Darkness, and recently posted Issue 08 - Forms. The art is dark and macabre and certainly not for the faint-hearted or immature – but if you're game, it's most extraordinary... [DWT < Design(Radar + Ample Sanity]

photoblog of Florida-based Ashly Schilling
Comments:
"My first love in life is, simply, Florida." Ashly enjoys camping and the outdoors and always has her camera with her as she and her boyfriend travel around the state. Good thing. There's Secret Woods, beaches, critters, and other beautiful things out there...;~)) [links.sbpoet.com]
Dizainer 12/18/05 Description:
digital images (Flash)
Comments:
This is Chris' 6th site version since launching back in 2001, a showcase of various digital prints from a strenuous imagination. Graphic design with a unique sci-fi style and illegible fine print throughout (a private signature of sorts) – inspiring imagery...
eSeAeNe 12/17/05 Description:
illustrations, murals, and other art (Flash)
Comments:
The collection of big, colorful murals painted in and around Madrid left me in awe – I'd love to see those walls close-up. And the artist's other sketches, illustrations, and paintings are just as amazing (to me anyway) – great urban style...
distributive justice 12/16/05 Description:
a project dealing with the topic of distribution of goods in a society (Flash)
Comments:
"Everyone is sensitive to the question of his/her share of the common good." Through past offline art exhibitions and the website itself, today's pick has gathering and presenting data related to the distribution of goods in societies around the world. The site's design is a little outdated in terms of browsers and plug-ins, so not everything works perfectly. But the amount of information and interesting interactive games and presentations makes it well worth exploring... [Net Art Links]
screenvader 12/15/05 Description:
digital imagery, motion, and music (Flash)
Comments:
If you wanna have some fun, download the variason Flash sound toy, turn the lights down low and the volume way up, and go to town with your keyboard – sort of a symphony and color light show all-in-one. Also in the media and algorythmes section is a collection of home made music you can listen to while you view the tasty art and design works in the galerie. There's more, but you'll have to explore...;~)) [Uailab]
kuest seak 12/14/05 Description:
photography archive (Flash)
Comments:
I'm impressed by the Flash interface – browse the entire archive of photos using just your keyboard if you like. And even more impressive are the photos themselves – Personal/People, Plants,, and Japanese Style among a total of 8 categories, plus the pop-up Misc Photo & Text photoblog. Nice!
RunDontWalk 12/13/05 Description:
streetart-based projects
Comments:
Back in April, as they approached the 2-year mark, it was noted that in addition to 371 spent cans of aerosol paint and 4 reams worth of diverse papers, the crew had consumed 122 liters of Kalimotxo, a "cheap drink, to take in great quantity, that causes important headaches." Though you won't be able to get back to the home page from the following links, I just have to point 'em out – hay bocha de mi aqui... and tester book #2 – a waycool collection of photos on one hand and great streetart style on the other – and there's plenty more where those came from...;~)) [Stupid Love]
Nature and Travel Photography by Rick Walker 12/11/05 Description:
a love of the outdoors and traveling
Comments:
Rick and his family love to travel. Their last trip was to Alaska back in August. It was Morocco and Spain in April and southern Florida in January. Those destinations represent just 3 of 19 photo galleries. Living in Colorado, Rick certainly has an eye for beautiful landscapes and wildlife – if you appreciate the great outdoors, you're gonna love his collection...
Broken Heartbeats 12/10/05 Description:
a personal collection of emotive photographs
Comments:
The person who posted the site described it as "stories and emotions through photographs." How fitting. Morning is an optimistic time, though the walls you've built are peeling and decaying. A passing state of well-being overtakes you and all seems glorious, if only for a passing moment...
The Watchmaker Project 12/9/05 Description:
personal journal and project playground of web designer Matthew Pennell
Comments:
There's an interesting post about how "internet know-it-all and web designer" Matthew came up with the site's name – makes me think of something an old boss used to mutter to himself – who pushed me in? Among the projects in Matthew's playground is a novel in progress (a "teen-sleuth adventure"), which though proceeding at "a snail's pace," also includes a nifty list of resources for writers. Another project in the works is an odd design portfolio – he plans to build some great websites for "pretend clients" since that full-time design job kinda prevents him from building a real portfolio – this could get interesting. There's also a section of design-related resources and the journal, where Matthew gets to "rant and rave" a bit, as well as post on topics related to design and standards. And what I really like about today's pick – I think it's a great design, even if the footer sucks...;~)) [Escape Crate]
neverhappen.com 12/8/05 Description:
a daily photography post
Comments:
There's a picture I feel fortunate to have in the Walls gallery and after spending some time in Rob's archive, I'm tickled to say his photoblog is today's pick. That way, I get to entice you to visit his site with things like a beautiful Ocean arch and these colorful Tasmanian ruins, or a day at the races. Rob's based in southern Queensland (Australia) where critters like this guy are also found. Be amused.

documentary glimpses in black & white (Flash)
Comments:
A poster reads "the sky is falling." A smoker takes a break next to a big tank of nitrogen. "Death is more perfect than life." Maybe not. Police in riot gear watch a protest in progress as a uniformed officer videotapes it all. An older protestor is tied to a bench. A man in a gas mask reads the morning news. The site design is a bit rough, but its stirring photographs quite effectively report real moments in the lives of people... [janpostma.com]
24.Log 12/5/05 Description:
photoblog from Japan
Comments:
If the site launched today and the only content was the picture currently on the main page, I probably would have picked it anyway. Okay, maybe not but once I saw the picture, I just had to explore. Yar launched the photoblog just 3 months ago and there's some true beauties in the archives. Yellow. Skyline. Wow! [Photoblogs.org]
Lumilux 12/3/05 Description:
near-daily photography
Comments:
"A one-on-one conversation is much more interesting than reading countless one-line comments," says Hans, who invites feedback by email instead of providing a comments feature on his photoblog. He also limits the archives to showing thumbnails for only the 32 most recent photos, though you can still start at the current photo or at the oldest and easily browse the entire collection. His reasons make sense to me – nothing wrong than being a little different. The site design and 76 photos posted since he launched the photoblog in September are also unique in positive ways – clean code, a variation from typical layouts I find very effective, and many outstanding photos including A Colorful Afternoon, Unlighted, and Iron Man, to name just a few. visual works by markus otti (Flash)
Comments:
"Loneliness meets emptyness." I'm wondering if eight is the final version of the site or perhaps, what Markus calls his "bitter end" is really just a haitus. The showcased visual works (covers, wallpapers, and other designs) all appear to have been done from 2001, when the site launched, through 2003. Some great stuff in my opinion. There's also links to some of the previous site versions. I've got a feeling that bitter may become better and the end could actually be a beginning. And if I'm wrong, I'm still glad to have found and enjoyed Markus' work... [upwardlink]

editorial and documentary photoseries
Comments:
From a graphic designer and photographer living in Paris who plans to soon continue working towards his BA in photography and journalism back home in Sweden, comes 7 small series of photos done over the last few years. From A swedish lovestory to the streetphotography series taken in Northern Paris, Martin's photos are sensitive and artful. I just have to provide an alternate entry point today though, since you can't get there from the main page – it leads not only to all of Martin's photographs, but also to a tasty Graphics section, an online magazine, and the Anarchy section of miscellaneous visual works – wouldn't wanna leave all that out...;~)) [del.icio.us]
