  • 4scandals.com 9/30/05
Description: 4 designers present each step of several collaborative projects in progress (Flash)
Comments: "At each stage of the project – from conseptualisation, to construction, to revitalisation, to project launch, the development in progress can be inspected by all." I really like the interface, though you'll probably have to explore a little to see how it all works. I guess you could say there's a bit of chemistry between the 4 designers behind the assortment of collaborative Flash works. Separately view each stage as designers add their individual input to a project, or a composite view of all steps completed so far – cool Flash and visuals, "and dedicated to you all..."  [iBLOG]

  • Ming Ong 9/29/05
Description: photography as a means to understand and assimilate into the culture stir-fry that is New York City (Flash)
Comments: When Ming Ong came to the US in the 90s, from Singapore, she got into photography as a way to "document life in her newly adopted environment." Living in Brooklyn, she likes to capture everyday people and is "intrigued by uniformed personnel, chiefly the disconnect between facial/body language and uniform/job." Superb black & white photography, capturing such events as 911, the Million Youth March (1998) and last year's RNC protests, plus a big section of tasty Holga pics (also b&w). As an aside, I've gotta mention the pets she and her husband have at home – "civet cat triplets, a one-eyed gecko and a semi-housetrained pink donkey named Strawberry." Now that's unique (just like the photos)...  [janpostma.com]

  • Celeste Najt 9/28/05
Description: photography and the recreation of it as a way for art (Flash)
Comments: Celeste refers to photography as an "unextinguishable food for life" and her cut and paste artworks combine photos with other graphic elements with a most unique collage style, as do the works in plain pleasures. And if it's just photos you want, photo spirit will please – "a way for art" – indeed!

  • oh, those everyday spaces 9/26/05
Description: expressions of one's experience of cycling
Comments: An article in York University's YFile described one of Don Sinclair's projects: "Variations/Variantes allows even the diehard couch potato to get a sense of what it’s like behind the handlebars of a bike." Don, a professor in the university's FACS program who teaches New Media Art, is also an avid cyclist. From the site's front page:
From January 2002 to March 2003, Don Sinclair collected images and data while cycling in and around Toronto, Canada. Wearing a digital camera, carrying a GPS receiver, and collecting local weather information, Don collected over 25,000 images and 80,000 GPS points. The works included here are different expressions of his experience of cycling.
Variations is just one of four fascinating projects you'll find there – enjoy the ride.  [Net Art Links]

  • Warmtone 9/25/05
Description: photographs by Martin Barnard, singer with Bristol band Alpha (Flash)
Comments: Martin Barnard, the photographer behind today's pick, is also a singer with the trip-hop group Alpha from Bristol (apparently the home of the genre). The small collection of photos is divided into three parts and the navigation limits you to starting either at the beginning (right-arrow) or the end (left-arrow). If you're fond of horizons, as I am, you may wanna start at the end, but do view the entire collection – Martin's images are superb...  [Newstoday®]

  • pomophobeART 9/24/05
Description: personal showcase of fine art, photography, video, music, and design (some mature content)
Comments: I guess I should warn you that some may find a few of Benjamin's short films a little risqué, but among the 26 videos are some amusing little gems. The irreverent OCADidol Auditions are a gas (to me anyway). Moving along to the Fine Art/Photography section, you'll find 27 visual works, including colorful paintings and drawings plus artsy black & white photos. There's also Music/Sound and Web/Print sections with 17 more works between them – add it all up, you've got a bustling, cool creative space.  [Ventilate]

  • china impressions 9/23/05
Description: created to share mind&photo relief taken during a friends trip to China (Flash)
Comments: Though navigation choices are rather limited for a gallery of this size (just my opinion), I think the site is visually appealing and really do like the Flash interface. But more important in my mind, Tom's collection of 248 photos taken in China is simply extraordinairy. Though I haven't viewed all the photos yet, you can bet I'll be back there soon to continue where I left off...;~))  [4efx]

  • When Dogs Fly 9/22/05
Description: It's all about representing, leaving your mark in the hood. (Flash)
Comments: "Thousands tossed worldwide" from cities throughout the US to places like South Africa, Greece, Iceland, and Hungary. Two brothers as kids tossed their worn out "dogs, kicks, grips, whatever you called them" – their sneaks always "got donated to the sky." As they grew up, they "realized [they] needed a quicker turn-around of grips to continue [their] childhood mission." So, since 1999, they've produced large numbers of wooden dogs to toss everywhere, unique silkscreened & stenciled editions. There's photos of their worldwide activity plus a very cool gallery of wood posters – welcome to Skewville...

  • Release1 9/21/05
Description: exploring design issues sheltered from market forces (Flash)
Comments: "Our collaborative workshops and exhibitions reveal what's possible when sheltered from market expectations. We use design to take our culture further." There's several interesting online exhibits I want to share. DisturbDelightDesign looks at design as a cultural force. "When the design process is pushed to the boundaries of art, when the constraints of reality are stripped away, the cultural impact becomes more apparent." I'm thinking the Pillow Pet just might be the perfect way to provide "comfort and companionship" for my real pets. But I don't think I'll be buying the Cult-Size jug of Suicider any time soon (at least I hope not). Browse the exhibit for more unique products created by an assortment of real-life professionals. Another exhibit, The McDonalds Project, is a gas (no pun intended). Burgerette isn't a terrible idea but I'm not sure if the Hands-Free To Go would ever catch on. Collectible Cattle Trading Cards, on the other hand, are a winner just waiting to happen. And that's not bull (okay – pun intended, the cheapest form of humor and all that). Oddly amusing and quite creative stuff.  [Webesteem]

  • UrbanMusings 9/20/05
Description: photography of an australian living in new york city
Comments: Describing her site in the third person, Carolyn says "this is an online gallery of her work, not a photoblog." She shoots with film, mostly black & white, and lives in New York City. Check out west side highway, nyc and cow girl for tasty starters...  [No Traces]

  • trusted computing 9/18/05
Description: an animated short about trusted computing
Comments: "Trusted Computing. Sounds great. Doesn't it?" Today's pick is a short film, available in a number of different formats, which promotes the Against-TCPA initiative. It explains that the process of trust "has been reshaped by the computer industry" and that mutuality (on which the idea of trust depends) is being removed from the equation with the introduction of microchips to restrict how we may use a mulitude of devices. We will no longer be able to decide on our own what is trustworthy. The simple question it raises: "If they don't trust you, why should you trust them?" Good question and something worth thinking about. Well done.  [RES72™]

  • doodlebrain 9/15/05
Description: a sketchblog where my doodles go to rest
Comments: "More doodles please!" A visitor left that comment on the most recent post (4/26/05). "I know...I have been too lazy lately..so sue me!" By the way, do see that entry if you wanna download some free photoshop brushes. Anyway, Doodle won't be hearing from my lawyers 'cause his online sketchbook is great – I doubt that we've seen the last of cool art...  [noscope]

  • Moving Insect 9/14/05
    Description: design wallpaper and photos
Comments: "Crawling like an insect, passing by various people, human faces, stylish design wallpapers, inspiring situations, colorful buildings, structures of men and nature." Henrik captures, or should I say expresses these moments in two ways. On one hand, colorful design wallpapers (free to download, of course), and on the other hand, some pretty amazing photography. I love his people photos. And yes – there's insects too...;~))  [blueverticalstudio@del.icio.us]

  • silence television 9/13/05
Description: illustration and animation by Gianmarco Magnani (Flash)
Comments: Gianmarco calls this first episode "Perfect White" noting it's without noise. I'll warn you that when you connect, the new content window automatically maximizes to fill the screen, unnecessarily in my opinion. Anyway, it's the content, along with a beautiful Flash design, which prompt me to share Gianmarco's site with you. He's got great talent when it comes to illustration and motion – cool animations and some stylish downloadables...  [High Floater]

  • Barcelona Street Art 9/12/05
Description: graffiti, stencils, stickers, and posters
Comments: The big collection of street art photos contains many works by the site's creator, an urban decorator living in Barcelona named Justin Case – I'm guessing it's a pseudonym, but not sure. Look for his distinctive mark, a case of course, among all the tasty graffiti, stencils, stickers, and posters. And just in case you wanna see more of his work (sorry Justin, I couldn't resist), his personal site is fun to explore too (though you'll need 1024x768 to see it all)...  [luxlotus@del.icio.us]

  • Yellow Is The New Pink 9/11/05
Description: punk and hardcore as a way of thinking, a way of life
Comments: Jan and Grit call the site one of their "personal little stepstones on the yelloy brick road to a better future." They're into punk and hardcore but not into what it has come to mean now. "Our beloved counterculture has become just another fad..." So they've created their own hc/punk zine with news, reviews, articles, and band photos. Interesting stuff. "It is politics, it is art, it is life..."  [beatpunk.org < deformat]

  • lomolabo photo 9/10/05
Description: the visions fly away, the photographs remain (Flash)
Comments: The navigation within each series of photos is cool but a little awkward until you figure it out. Once you use your mouse to get to the first picture in a series, you can then navigate from photo to photo or to get back to the home page using the arrow keys on your keyboard. If you use only your mouse to get around, you'll need to use the browser's [back] button to get back to the home page. Anyway, it's the dozen series of Lomos I really like about today's pick – outstanding!  [Maniackers]

  • famfamfam 9/8/05
Description: personal site and web playground
Comments: Computer Science major Mark James, who also works part-time as a web developer, decided to launch the site on August 28th. "After spending months playing around on and off with various blogging and content management systems, I eventually took the logical conclusion; it was better to have a simple site online with none of the bells and whistles, than to have an all-singing, all-dancing site in a constant state of being 60% completed." So it's online and though he's still working on the Flash and PHP lab sections, he's sharing 3 big sets of icons well worth bringin' to your attention. Note that Mark's linkware icons are .gif or .png images, intended for website or web application use (as opposed to desktop icons). "I find churning out little web icons fairly relaxing. Other people do icons better, but I love free stuff, and I'm sure you do too." Why, thank you sir!  [del.icio.us < Populicious]

  • scott.j38.net 9/7/05
Description: animation, images, music, and code
Comments: The site's design is straightforward, clean, and minimal. And Scott's a creative dude. Being a real signage aficionado, I simply love his novel animations. Crosswalk for example. Great drawings and original music too – this one's my kinda cool...  [notmuch@del.icio.us]

  • Anthony Burrill 9/5/05
    Description: graphic design works
Comments: "Come in. We're closed." I've gotta wonder if the Hans Brinker Budget Hotel is for real 'cause the series of posters Anthony did for them is a gas. "Now. Free use of fire escape." I wonder what they charged before. And fortunately, there's now "a door in every room." This graphic designer seems to dig his work. The Bloomberg Mural had to be fun to do! Brindley Estate and Magic Land are other series I enjoyed, but my fave has got to be the oh-so-seventies Modern Pyramid – I dig his work too...;~))

  • jpgproject 9/3/05
    Description: collaborative visual showcase (Flash)
Comments: The first project, launched just last month, features 42 covers designed by 15 different artists, designers, and photographers. You can view larger versions at random by reloading the splash page or browse the entire collection using the contact sheet interface. Excellent visual content! Providing an area of expression for artists where creativity can be exposed without censorship, they're seeking additional collaborators to participate – I'm guessing project#02 will be good...;~))  [zeroin]
