an experiment gone useful
Comments:
R. Marie Cox says part of the site's purpose "is to develop a solid, yet extendable, collection of classes that can be used over and over again for various web applications." It's a personal experiment, a "springboard for ideas" in which she can test the application framework she's developing. "It's tedious, it's horrible, and it's totally worth it in the long run." A number of interesting projects "relying on a common code set" are featured. If you're a designer, you're bound to find the CSS Help Pile and ap.log useful – create an account and you'll be able to save your favorite links using Scribble. Another fun projects lets you "create an online list of all your LEGO® sets." The site's somewhat a work in progress, now in its 7th version, but it certainly appears to have "gone useful." And I enjoyed meeting Yuki in the photo.lab...;~))
typomagical 6/28/05 Description:
continuous display of typography and graphic design (Flash)
Comments:
This one's for the inspiration. Just "pop me" and you're in and drag the bunny to enjoy Romin's work. It's one big, continuous image with plenty of white space – cool illustration and typographic design – "beauty shall save the world." Simply typomagical... [Fish N Chips < Uailab]
Subway Life 6/26/05 Description:
drawings of people on subways in cities throughout the world (Flash)
Comments:
"When people are shut in a subway carriage they look for something to do during their journey. They read the paper, listen to music or brood on something unpleasant said to them at work. I prefer to draw the other people." António Jorge Gonçalves spent time riding the subways in 10 different cities, drawing "whoever [sat] in front of [him]" – enjoy the ride...
stencilboard.at 6/22/05 Description:

the freesound project 6/21/05 Description:
a collaborative database of Creative Commons licensed sounds
Comments:
"Many audio research institutions have trouble finding correctly licensed audio..." On one hand, today's pick hopes to solve that problem for the researchers by providing sounds released under Creative Commons' "Sampling Plus" license. On the other hand, the site provides sound-artists with a place where they can upload their recordings or snippets to share with others, or download sounds to use in their latest mash-ups. There's also forums and various ways to search and browse the growing database – sounds pretty cool if you ask me...;~)) [Firmly Wedged]
Ma~ 6/20/05 Description:
drawings, collage art, and photos (Flash)
Comments:
Today's pick has a strange but impressive interface, replacing your cursor with its own. It might make your real cursor act a little goofy in other windows, so you may wanna hold off on multi-tasking 'til you're done browsing Ma's cool drawings, collages, photos, and other goodies...;~))
Nebojsa Nikolic 6/19/05 Description:
paintings of Serbian artist Nebojsa Nikolic (Flash)
Comments:
The works of contemporary painter Nebojsa Nikolic done over the last two years are presented – there's several triptychs I really like. The original paintings would be delightful to see close-up (which I'll have to remember if I ever get to Serbia), but the web reproductions are done well and so is the interface. Enjoy... [RES72]
Mine is no disgrace 6/18/05 Description:
filled with secrets
Comments:This is the place. You'll have to explore a little to get the secret of Matt's navigation scheme – I just love the non-linear presentation. And if you like portraits, here's another tasty entry point for ya...;~)) [low resolution]
keepgoing.org 6/16/05 Description:
quarterly magazine featuring original fiction, nonfiction, poetry, photography, and music
Comments:
"We won't publish your stuff if it sucks, unless you know someone on staff." Since the Fall of 2000, like clockwork, today's pick has published a new quarterly issue "on the first day of each season." A long list of creative contributors provide poetry, essays, fiction, and opinion pieces. There's also some music, like Monkey Knife Fight in the current issue, which now resides in my personal music library, thank you. And after perusing a number of the archived issues, sorry, but I was unable to find anything that sucks...;~))
Zeloot 6/13/05 Description:
flyers, posters, and other illustrations
Comments:
I like the minimal look and feel, navigation scheme, and circular thumbnails. It's a showcase of posters and flyers and other works from Zeloot, an illustrator in the Netherlands – an original visual style! [Newstoday®]
Deceptive Media 6/10/05 Description:
Andy Bell's photoblog from the UK
Comments:
The color and detail in Andy's most recent simply grabbed me. This one too. As if 18-months-worth of such magic and an excellent design aren't enough, Andy's other site, his moblog, is a real treat in itself...;~)) [MarkMyShots.com]
motelmotel 6/8/05 Description:
a pic every day
Comments:
"Jeden tag ein foto." Since January, Jan has been taking a picture everyday. As each new month begins, the set of daily photos from the previous month is posted in its entirety – sort of a monthly diary (a colorful and interesting visual narrative). Most of the images are just 150x200 in size, presented in a scrollable horizontal layout – sure works for me...;~))
Pasquale Vitale 6/4/05 Description:
personal photography
Comments:
There's 3 directions one could follow from the splash, one of them being Pasquale's acquariofilia project. The photos are beautiful. Pasquale has two aquariums plus "a beautiful bathtub, 80x35x50". full of plant life and tropical fish – sure makes for vibrant color. There's more, including outdoor panoramas, assorted macro shots, and a standalone gallery with its own categories – it's all good...;~))
Whateverland 6/2/05 Description:
a collection of photographs taken by Archie FlorCruz
Comments:
Having lived in Chicago for many years (a great city, thank you), today's pick is a treat for me. Of course, I hope it is for you too. Years ago, I worked on almost the top floor of the tall white building in the top left corner of this picture – is that an amazing photo or what? Archie's fisheyes and macros are cool too – enjoy a visit to Whateverland...;~)) [Raster]
Caffeinated Cat 6/1/05 Description:
stuck in the cesspool of design since 1999 (Flash)
Comments:
"Please don't contact me if you're looking for web work / help. I'm leaving the site online so people can enjoy it, but as for me, I am officially out of the biz." Travis still does web design for a local music software company, but he's working less these days and doesn't seem to miss being in business for himself. "I shut it down because I dreamed of slaughtering my clients." Sounds like a good reason to me. So why does he still maintain an online portfolio? "There's a lot of history here." Nice design a some tasty wallpapers too. Now, about that Cat Juggling thing...;~)) [DOPE]
