  • wasted beauty 7/31/05
Description: surreal drawings without a description (Flash)
Comments: "I wish you would feel." The anonymous artist states "there is no concept." The site showcases about a dozen drawings against a dreamy soundscape (with volume control), presented via what I think is a beautiful interface. And speaking of beautiful, the drawings are some of best I've seen – all "done with paper, pencil, mind and a little actionscript..."  [robocore.]

  • now 7/30/05
Description: photography, coding (art), and words "from the upper right hand area of the USA"
Comments: If you want to learn about author, Kyle's Letters Home are interesting – glad I took the time to read through them. The site's got hundreds of photos – 26 Light sets for starters – some beautiful shots. Others sets I really enjoyed are Sunsrise/set and Pipe Dreams. There's a whole other side of today's pick, Electrons, which showcases some of Kyle's coding. Or should I say art. Add some illustrations and a few other things – it's quite a creative space.  [sjeiti]

  • rok2 graffiti writer 7/29/05
    Description: Lay back and enjoy!
Comments: Selected for its cool original content, today's pick houses the works of a graffiti writer in Innsbruck, Austria who's been at it for almost 10 years. There's also pieces done with the BDMSK-crew from Poland, which Rok2 joined in 2000. Besides dozens of works on walls, there's big productions and works done on canvas. Rok2's style has changed several times through the years, but all his work is quite unique and colorful. Lay back and enjoy!  [cancontrollers.net]

  • duckfarm.net 7/28/05
Description: freeware icons and desktops (for private personal use only)
Comments: If you're looking for colorful desktops and/or unique icon sets (for both PC and Mac), I guess you've stopped by at the right time. They're all freeware for private personal use only, so please don't modify, distribute, or use them in any publications or web projects, thank you – but do enjoy 'em on your own computer...;~))  [mmbaldwin@del.icio.us]

  • gumob.com 7/27/05
    Description: online playground (Flash)
Comments: Kojiro explains that the word gumob means "the aggregate of not the organized structure divided by class but the virtual organization which disappears if born." While the site serves somewhat as a portfolio of works related to architecture (in which he earned a Masters degree) and graphics, the more recent content consists of Flash programming experiments. Mosaic Ver.2 is one I really had fun with this morning ("converting bitmaps to dots array"). I uploaded an image of my own and viola! – Kojiro's application generated the image effect and my picture became a little part of his playground. There's a number of other experimental pieces, plus a few hundred photos taken in Europe and China you might also enjoy...;~))  [thedreamer*]

  • 360 days 7/26/05
Description: a vr-log - everyday life in QTVR panoramas (Quicktime)
Comments: Mickael calls it a vr-log and like yesterday's pick, panoramas are the primary content of the site. In Mickael's case, the 360° pictures are presented via Quicktime and represent everyday life. He's been posting several new panoramas monthly since the site launched a year ago and many are available in both fullscreen and small sizes. There's a few collaborative pieces too, plus a little bonus – another site featuring 18 more QTVRs he did in 1999. "Hope you enjoy it all, and I can't wait to read what you have to say." I say cool, thank you...;~))

  • rundblick 7/25/05
Description: panorama pictures of Croatia, Spain, Ireland, and Germany, plus illustrations and other photos (Flash)
Comments: The site's name, which is also the pseudonym of its author, translates into English as "panorama." And he should keep that name 'cause his 360° panoramic photos from various countries simply rock! "A ticket for a journey." There's another section of photography on Rundblick's to-do list, plus a nice little showcase of illustrations. I like the interface too...  [zeroin]

  • Revista Busca Online 7/22/05
Description: visual magazine featuring street art and design (Flash)
Comments: "The growth must be horizontal." From Brasil, focused on "art of the digital age" and street art, comes the second issue of this online magazine. Besides the tasty visual content, I like that you can zoom images in place as you browse its pages. And don't miss the cool video content accompanying each issue...;~))  [crossmind.net]

  • 903 Damen Ave. 7/21/05
Description: the adventures of Bischi and Urs
Comments: Two dogz from Lucerne have somehow ended up Chicago on Damen Avenue. They love taking photos as they move about the area in their van. It seems a fun adventure with plenty of street photos, some short films, and of course, pictures of Bischi and Urs. Cheers guys...;~))  [Newstoday®]

  • Lake Detrus 7/19/05
    Description: experimental trippy graphic design
Comments: Listed in the zone for almost 2 years, I bumped into the site again this morning. And my, was it green! Trippy visual creations and photos plus big colorful goodies for the desktop. Experimental is a good thing...;~))

  • _____igit. 7/18/05
Description: analog fun in digital times (Flash) (site automatically spawns pop-up content window)
Comments: The site'll spawn a new window when you hit the main page, where you can play a little game of connect the dotz (or skip it if you like to go straight to the content). It looks like Igit has left autographs all over the city in the form of colorful graffiti art and stickers. The site features 6 series of photos, each presented as a kind of slideshow with some tasty beats in the background. Cool illustration skills with original style – just a little analog fun...;~)  [ekosystem.org]

  • Water One Art 7/17/05
    Description: murals and other art
Comments: Waterone announced "tons of updates coming" back in February when he launched the new site and though he's apparently still "crazy busy" at the moment, his small portfolio of original murals, artworks on canvas, and other designs is a most enjoyable browse. Looking forward to seeing what shows up in the motion section...  [DWT < poutsi@del.icio.us]

  • break into pieces 7/14/05
    Description: gallery of Lomos (Flash)
Comments: If you like Lomo photos, you'll enjoy this collection of recent shots by Japanese photographer Yoshiyuki Yatsuda. Photos scale nicely to your window size – very cool interface (though a sound control would make it even better). Some magical images here...;~))  [crossmind.net]

  • BLIR 7/13/05
Description: dedicated to promoting the work of emerging artists in the fields of painting, drawing, graphic design, illustration and photography
Comments: In its fourth issue since January, today's pick features visual works from 8 talented contributors. The previous 3 issues feature a total of 21 other photographers, artists, and designers. Great stuff throughout...  [Newstoday®]

  • greyscalegorilla 7/12/05
    Description: personal photoblog and journal
Comments: Found along a path from yesterday's pick, I do believe I found a little gem. "As digital gives way to film, candid/street photos give way to posed portraits." Nick, a student in graphic design and film production, shares one his first sessions of shooting in a controlled environment, the Miss Brown series – start at the most recent and click through to the previous 2 – love it! Next stop, the archive – lomos, people, landscapes – cool creativity...;~))

  • unsharpen.net 7/11/05
    Description: photoblog of Matthew Brown
Comments: The most recent pic is a great example of Matthew's obvious knack for portraiture. And I just love remnants of signage, screaming color, and rolling down the road, thank you...;~))

  • PixelPress 7/10/05
Description: to encourage documentary photographers, writers, filmmakers, artists, human rights workers and students to explore the world in ways that take advantage of the new possibilities provided by digital media
Comments: "Our online magazine features projects that use a variety of linear and non-linear strategies, attempting to articulate visions of human possibility even while confirming human frailty. For us the digital revolution is a revolution in consciousness, not in commerce." 12x12, a series of photo essays, fills the main page of the site. After the Tsunami and Death of a Responsible Man are simply gripping, as are some of the other exhibitions and projects...

  • spaet.net 7/9/05
Description: "the website that I (Franz Thues) post my photos to" (Flash)
Comments: "I like late," says Franz. "I work late, I like to sleep late, I'm all around late (except when working for money, which somehow transforms me into a very on-time person)..." A graphic design student in Germany, Franz uses a Flash frontend for his photoblog. Photos scale down in size nicely to fit your window and the margins are clickable for previous/next – I like it. Then there's the photos. People. Walls. And touches of magic...;~))  [Photoblogs.org]

  • jun-pierre shiozawa 7/8/05
    Description: art, comics, and illustrations
Comments: If you've got some time, you might enjoy Jun's lucky – "an original ongoing series about ann and steve, 2 lovers fated to each other through luck." For shorter attention spans, there's inarticulate, a "short comic about 2 people and their relationship." Several other comics plus fine art and illustrations – the works of Parisian artist Jun-Pierre Shiozawa – superb!  [vignamaru.com.br]

  • The World is Our Sound Toy 7/7/05
Description: exploring a musical interpretation of the environment around us (Shockwave)
Comments: "The concept is quite simple. It is to extend [the] user interface of audio software into the real world." Imagine telegraph lines acting like the strings of a bass and you get an idea what the sound toys are all about. Using Shockwave, a photo becomes the interface – click on different spots along each wire to produce the tones. There's 9 other toys to interact with, each with a discussion of its concept and how it might be extended – "aural augmentation of reality" – intriguing...  [designerror@Newstoday®]

  • motelsign.com 7/6/05
Description: traveling the back roads and secondary highways of the United States since 1995 in search of old motels
Comments: They like to hit the road as often as possible, particularly in the West, and capturing the signage of those old motels is what photographers Paul and Peggy like to do out there. They've been at it since 1995. Bright colors and retro flavor...;~))  [populicio.us < del.icio.us]

  • cancontrollers.net 7/5/05
    Description: urban art
Comments: You might encounter Kryot engaging in some urban intervention though more natural settings aren't out of the question. Found on walls, sometimes inside, its colorful style is bound to grab ya...  [stencilboard.at]

  • ( anothertimes ) 7/4/05
Description: to reflect on those moments I want to remember through photos
Comments: Álex, based in Barcelona, calls himself a "simple fan" of photography who likes to capture moments through images. Though visitors may comment on individual pictures, the site's archives are organized by month. There's also a portofolio with several interesting galleries. I'll just say I love lomovisión and febrero was a beautiful month...;~))

  • pHreak 7/3/05
Description: free space for strange stuff
Comments: "We're getting over 50 membership applications a day. Most of these are total losers so we ignore them..." Apparently, the control pHreaks are a picky trio when it comes to giving out free space. They're looking for strange stuff, but if you submit something lame, be prepared for a little public humiliation. Then again, if you're a true pHreak, you just might get the free space you asked for. Within the pHreakiverse, you'll find a variety of sites they did accept, from kult-ur to muzik to activism. And yes, most of them are strange. Wear yer sunglasses and have pHun!  [unartist@del.icio.us]

  • Maniacal Rage 7/2/05
Description: senseless acts of writing... plus short films
Comments: I watched two short films this morning – one about a rather persistent meatball and the other, an odd story of a rare glass bowl. They're from a list of four films made by Garrett and a friend. Sure, today's pick sports a brand spankin' new, USDA Approved design and the writing ain't so senseless afterall. But those two films I watched this morning made today's pickin' easy – go watch 'em silly...;~))

  • FA.KE magazine 7/1/05
Description: photography, art, fashion & design – a place to be inspired and to inspire others
Comments: "Many of the mags out there weren't quite what I was looking for. If a magazine was about fashion, it didn't have design in it, and if it was about design, there wasn't any fashion or photography in it. I wanted to combine those elements." So says Jolijn Snijders, a designer/illustrator who launched the site last September with the counterfeit issue – "it's okay to be phony." The current issue (#04) is a long, horizontally scrolling thing with visual stimulation from over 20 talented contributors. "Fake magazine is all about creativity & inspiration really." Yes it is!  [attakweb < Newstoday®]
