Best of British 2/28/04 Description:
creative design in the UK
Comments:
Today's pick is an alternative portal dedicated to "exceptional web sites" made in the UK. Brief commentary, a rating, and tasty screenshot are included in each listing and there's pointers-a-plenty to quality sites from British web teams and designers.
Midisko 2/27/04 Description:
an homage to midi music – enjoy the symbiosis between low-fi midi and hi-fi design
Comments:
The launch of the site was announced at Lounge72, k10k, and robocore, all on Tuesday, and I just had to see what all the noise was about. It's low-fi noise in the form of midi files and there's 3 CDs in the slick jukebox. Listen to the tunes or download all 3 compilations and if you're a designer, you can download a template and submit artwork for each of the 3 CD covers. It's a competition of sorts "for fun and honor" and I'm looking forward to seeing the submissions. Connecting lo-fi midi to hi-fi design – what a cool concept!
republicart 2/26/04 Description:
a transnational research project exploring and developing progressive practices of public art
Comments:
Spaces. Public and virtual spaces. Art. Politics. Social movements. Public art. I can't offer a review of today's pick that will do it justice, but I will say that just a few hours of exploring what artists and art theoreticians from all over Europe have to say about the connection between art in public spaces and political/social movements has left me hungry for more. Exploring several referenced art projects ("practices") affected me similarly. The "field of participatory, interventionist and activist art practices" is enormous and so is the site's amount of written content about it. There's also 3 downloadable (.pdf) lists related to the field. I've already grabbed the list of related online art magazines. If you're interested in contemporary art theory, exploring today's pick could possibly become an ongoing project for you... [del.icio.us/]

low-budget photoexperiments
Comments:
A stencil on the wall says "against all" and left me wondering what must've been on the artist's mind. I don't know if Victor is the artist, but his photograph of the "aerowall" seems to fit the flavor of the surrounding site design perfectly. Then there's a shot of a window that has to be my fave (though "tunnel" could be too). Totally inspiring light and shadows. The site just launched last week and Victor's small collection of "photoexperiments" is engaging. Looking forward to seeing more...
AlterFin 2/23/04 Description:
art & play – design & programming – friends & links
Comments:
This morning, I found myself thinking about the face of Dominique, a cool "inter - Face" I had found last year, linked in the news at figoo. Didz called it a "very nice non-flash thingie" and for some reason this morning, I remembered it and how cool it was and the fact that I never checked out rest the site it was on. So that's what I did early this morning and am I glad! After watching a weird "UnCommercial" and taking in "Twenty Drawings" (IE), and then being totally amused by "Scrumpdillyishus Land" and realizing how much more there was, I knew my job was done. Yariv Alter Fin is the person behind it all and to learn more about this interesting guy, just view the source...
Gary Dunkin 2/22/04 Description:
photography and photo-documentary
Comments:
The site showcases the work of NYC photographer/photojournalist Gary Dunkin. I found myself jumping back to a number of the portraits for a second, then a third look. A real study in personalities, some celebrities and some everyday people. Pictures of Auschwitz prisons, 9/11, and the "Shiesty Heights Boys" are among other interesting series you'll find here. Happy browsin'... [Newstoday®]

As of January 24th, they were still looking for someone to "play the role of the Prince of Persia, space-invader" in "Wortal Kombat" and I'm sitting here listening to "WhatUwant" thinking to myself that I could've probably played him. Oh well. The show's come and gone now but I'm sure they're still busy with their "research into interaction, games and love affaires." Two things sucked me in here. The first is a Shockwave thing called graf. Amazing or funky? I say both – very cool performance art. The other thing is the music I downloaded, especially the song I mentioned above. I've definitely gotta get to Amsterdam one of these days...;~))
donald tetto :photography 2/15/04 Description:
a frequently updated gallery of photography
Comments:
A "hobbyist" who carries his camera everywhere, Donald has a "rather prolific output of digital photography" and uses the site to share what he considers to be the best of the "multitudes of photos" he takes. He's not the first to say that doing this sort of thing, sharing on the web, helps one to improve their skills or technique. So true! Powered by his own PHP/MySQL coding, Donald's well-designed site provides various filtering options and I'll suggest an easy route, if you like photography, that is. Just start with the most recent shot and work your way backwards, one photo at a time. By the time you get to February 1st and probably sooner than that, you'll find yourself agreeing with my friend Julius, who pointed me Donald's way – today's pick is a very pleasing photoblog...
The Mirrorbook 2/14/04 Description:
real world portfolio - pixels, vectors and web projects (Flash)
Comments:
"Use this Book like you use a Book!" The artsy black-on-red cover opens and closes like a shutter to reveal content. A click on the middle branch of the menu reveals the pages of the Book, but don't click too fast – the mouseover effect is worth pausing for. B.L. shares pixels, each artwork representing a "melancholic memory," and other tabs open sections of vector drawings and web projects. Pages turn a little more realistically than just a click – nice Flash work. The site design is as visual appealing and interesting as the artsy content found within – a real world mirror, perhaps, of the person behind it all...
sarsair 2/13/04 Description:
the world's most exiting (as in way out) airline
Comments:
Friday (with a thirteen, no less) and yet another long, grueling week here at chez coolstop. Now, I won't give y'all a headache by gloating about how many hundreds of days in a row I've been doin' this dumbass cool thing, but I will tell you I need a break! I need to get away, maybe to Kape Fukuka, or Critterton. Or maybe Bubaneswar is the perfect escape, but dammit, I need a vacation from all of this before my head explodes. And I want an airline that'll treat me right. I want flyer miles for my kitties (all thirteen of 'em) and an airline that disinfects its fleet now and then. I also want complimentary champagne, heroin and caviar if that's not asking too much, thank you. Well. I'm pleased to say I'm off to Anamisoto and I'm flyin' sarsair – Wheeeee....
transforma 2/10/04 Description:
video and graphics. oscillating between discourse and loss of control (Quicktime)
Comments:
If you like sharp motion graphics and you're looking for an excuse to crank up the volume a bit, check out today's pick. They produce "images for soundworks" and perform "live screening, editing and deconstruction" of their video material at clubs and concerts around Berlin. There's 6 Quicktime movies and I started with "yellowbeats." Short, but sweet subwoofer goodness. A newer video called "spaque" done in January features a mix by digital-gadget – extreme techno sound (if I had to label it) with cool graphics and type, plus a subtle reference to another site that may be in the works. Left curious about that, I moved on to the other works and found each one just as interesting, but each in its own way... [Experimental Magazine]
scott pommier . photographer 2/8/04 Description:
a gallery of skateboarders and other people (Flash)
Comments:
"As for the future Scott hopes to one day be rich enough to hire someone else to write a biography for his website as he feels 'like an idiot' writing in the third person." That's the first thing I like about today's pick. Attitude. The bio tells a tale of graduating from "the dole" and entering the "EOS 630 era" and Scott sounds like anything but an idiot. The other thing I like is the photos, but I guess you already knew that...;~þ [del.icio.us/tag/photography]
trudydesign 2/4/04 Description:
whale graphic design (Flash)
Comments:
"Relaxed whales are welcome" to the latest version, featuring Trudy's personal works and experiments. Turn on the whale cry, choose your favorite sea color and enjoy some great illustrations, paintings, and photos, among other things. I especially liked the newest movie ("Proud"), the characters in the "artwork" section, and the England photos plus all of Trudy's paintings – enjoyed everything. The site actually is quite relaxing, thank you...
reefscape.net 2/2/04 Description:
a personal collection of thoughts, ideas, experiments, pixels and vectors...
Comments:
Though I don't typically review inactive sites, today's pick looks like it hasn't been updated for almost 2 years. Apparently dormant since the days of Flash 5, there's a good amount of visual content and since Bob chose to leave it all online (except for one password-protected area), I've decided to go ahead and share it with you. Bob, who lives in the Netherlands, spent 7 months in Japan, resulting in hundreds of pictures of "plastic samurai and vending machines" (and other things) Another trip to Russia in the summer of 2001 resulted in the smaller "empire down" collection. There's more, including other photographics, some walls, a flash playground, and a cool, 4-part piece called "scenery" (with even more colorful vending machines). I can't help but think (and hope) that Bob's been traveling again and maybe the site is only temporarily sleeping... [linkdup]
Loretta Lux 2/1/04 Description:
a showcase of photographic art
Comments:
"Amazingly different photographs" says Mark Langeneck, who posted the link at k10k. Loretta herself says "By photographing children alone, divorced from any social setting, I allow them to exist on their own...I am exploring the equivocal connection between self and world." A photographer who thinks like a painter, Loretta Lux share 4 galleries of works and they're different than anything you've seen. Trust me...
