  • Thinking Woman's Diary 8/29/04
Description: a creative domain where one woman's philosophies, revelations and reflections get hung out to dry
Comments: From star-gazing to the 60s, cell phones to ferocious winter gales, a clock with a mind of its own to the need to "make the most of every single breath."  Ann's fresh, creative domain is a treat if you ask me.  She's been documenting her "philosophies, revelations and reflections" there since April – a mass of well-written content that's quite engaging.  The Thinking Woman – the appropriate moniker.  "One thing we often forget is how much power we have."

  • monovolume 8/28/04
Description: just an experimental mag from Brazil
Comments: Lounge72 announced a redesign of the site earlier this month and designer Daniel calls it the "psycho-pananoic version" of his experimental mag.  From Brazil, the site features assorted-topic articles and designer interviews in Portuguese only, but also has a nice directory of design, music, and art sites with more cool links in the highlights, plus some cool wallpapers and a featured web inspiration.  Add a visually appealing site design (in my opinion) and today's pick leaves me thinkin' that phsyco-paranoic ain't necessarily a bad thing...;~))

  • Quidante.com 8/27/04
Description: the work of valentijn (Flash)
Comments: "After four years of hard work I graduated with honor an I'm ready to kick some ass."  In July, young designer Valentijn Destoop got his Masters and I'd say his future is bright.  But it's the past, with its projects, graphics, and digitals, plus an absolutely stunning site design, that are sure to please, right now...  [figoo]

  • swanksigns dot org 8/24/04
Description: dedicated to the art of mocking public works
Comments: "Mocking things is always fun, right?"  Maybe I'm a little too easily amused by odd signage, but I'm not alone.  Today's pick features a gallery of over 150 photos of signs from around the world of the "bizarre and twisted" variety, inviting visitors to comment, or should I say, mock 'em.  Some really funny stuff (to us easily-amused types).  Afterall, "street signs are an easy thing to mock as they can't mock back..."  [Found on the Web]

  • Her-realm.com 8/22/04
Description: unique, intimate journal of the girl with many pseudonyms (some mature content)
Comments: Her realm is one of frank honesty.  "I'm an infant on a consume and digest kick when it comes to daily discoveries."  Twenty-something, a private person with many pseudonyms who's admittedly "happily weird" and addicted to underground hip-hop.  [Infatuated and fascinated.
My ink falls without a parachute, writhing in artistic agony once its hit the ground, and noone seems to understand why my blues and blacks attempt these suicides...

They defy life so I won't die, so I can have something that's not a lie, something that's truly real, something as real as death.

Frankly honest, and creative as hell, in my opinion anyway...

  • Unsinn 8/21/04
    Description: nonsense... (Flash)
Comments: If you think about it, what I do here daily is nonsense, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.  It's also fun.  Nonsense.  That's the word I used to describe today's pick in the listings.  Well, actually, you can blame Google if my translation of the site's title is incorrect.  Anyway, though Oliver's site is light on content (with built-in room for expansion), it was a nice diversion early on a Saturday morning.  I never could get all the eyes closed, but it was fun[ny] trying.  Visit to play.  There's also a gallery of 4 images, but 3 more empty galleries, ready-to-go with spots for new images, have me hoping more artworks are forthcoming.  And Oliver's 2002 Flash experiments are colorful nonsense as well...;~))  [urban collective]

  • anthropy 8/20/04
Description: photoblog. a picture a day
Comments: The photography and short videos are extraordinary.  Bernard captures color, light, texture, and detail with great skill, in my opinion.  Pictures, not words, can better illustrate what I mean.  Like the promenade, twisted, and montreal's angels (definitely my favorite).  Seeing what Bernard sees is interesting and amusing, to say the least...;~))

  • Snap-Shoot Photography 8/17/04
Description: The house which fell into ruin. A wayside plant. An old car and a motorbike. The fallen bicycle. And the look of a dog.
Comments: A glimpse of perfection (subjective, I know) and another – there's magic in Doggylife's monochrome.  And the smaller selection of color shots offers some perfect snap-shoots too...  [DWT < BlogShares]

  • Olde English Sketch Comedy 8/16/04
Description: video sketches from a comedy troupe – new content weekly (Quicktime) (some mature content)
Comments: Today's pick, "in its new form, will be updated with a new video on a weekly basis, making it the only regularly updated sketch site on the internet," according to Ben Popik, one of the comedy troupe's 10 current members (and site builder).  Okay, so there's a lot of sites out there that call themselves funny and update regularly, but every Quicktime video I watched here, last night and this morning, was funny!  Excellent production and a crew of very talented comics.  It's more in the league of SNL comedy in my opinion, but there's nothing typical about it.  From a tale of two hungry rappers to a case of Adam Fever (oops, I meant cabin fever) to a slew of hilarious Apple Switch Parodies, it's pure entertainment!  The videos carry a CC license and visitors are invited to "download, distribute, and share them."  At the very least, do watch a few of 'em...

  • plinko 8/15/04
Description: Jenni's collection of personal web projects
Comments: There's an area of another site listed here since late '02, which is most amusing.  Another project I just found via the main page of argyle dragonfly was created by the the same person.  And since that same person is also behind yet two more cool projects I just discovered in the process, plus one more by another author, why not just send you to Jenni's springboard to all of 'em...;~))

  • Cristian Stan 8/14/04
    Description: photography
Comments: Three galleries and a project called "eidolinia" that simply rocks!  A spectacular tiny row of trees with white above and black below in one pic, just like the colorful layers of sky, grass, life, and earth in another, tell me Cristian enjoys a special perspective as he views the world.  A shot of a perfect sky above a beautiful brick wall confirm it for me.  Then, that third shot in gallery two leaves me staring at the screen for minutes, enjoying yet another unique vision shared through the lens.  Beautiful photoart...  [Conscientious]

  • FILE Magazine 8/13/04
Description: a collection of unexpected photography
Comments: They "keep their eyes peeled" for a certain kind of photo and also welcome unsolicited submissions.  "Alternate takes, odd angles, unconventional observations" are what they collect and publish (with photographers' permission) – a filter, seeking "photographs that treat subjects in unexpected ways."  It couldn't be a better time, considering the explosion of photography on the web.  There's a few dozen outstanding photos in the collection, plus two features in the galleries and they're just getting started...  [rsanders@del.icio.us/]

  • acrodecade 8/12/04
Description: fine art paintings and photographs of Bjorn C Andersson (Flash)
Comments: It was Bjorn's collection of 28 amazing square photos I discovered early this morning via linkdupPurpurite is just a chapter of the site where I also came upon Bjorn's paintings and sketches.  "Requires a calm mind."  The Pharmaceutical series – how can I approach it with my own words?  I can't.  "I wonder if the graffiti artist knew just how accurate he was in his decoration of that white exterior wall, the drugs pouring over the people on the other side of the wall, people navigating through their anxiety guided by happy pills or a hang-over spiced with aspirin."  There's an eerie soundtrack still playing as I invite you to leave now...

  • argyle dragonfly 8/11/04
Description: a collage of projects spanning all of my years on the net
Comments: Back in April of 1998, a site called "The Dystopian Kalopsia & The Tidy Slapper" was selected as a best of the cool pick (they weren't called daily picks until early '99 when yours truly started doin' it every day).  Anyway, sometime since then, a round of link validation testing resulted in the link to that site being removed from the listings, as it couldn't be reached for several days.  Dystopian Kalopsia had been online since 1997 and this morning, I got to see it again.  Cool.  You see, Heidi submitted her newest site yesterday, apparently launched in 2002 – she calls it a collage of projects (17 of 'em) and it's an interesting history of her creativity on the web – writing, photography, graphics – good stuff.  If I'm not mistaken, she started doing the web thing in 1997 just like coolstop.  Small world this web, and I always enjoy a good re-connection.  Just another reminder how much I love doing this web thing.  Thanks Heidi...

  • go photoblog 8/10/04
Description: color and black & white photography
Comments: Go, a/k/a Pixelillusion, relaunched the site less than a month ago with a picture of his fiancé.  Beautiful shot.  Beautiful subject.  There's some other great people pics in the archives too.  The previous version appears to have been taken offline, so it's a fresh start for his photoblog, which already has 27 shots posted.  I like the site design – it's minimal with simple, small icons for navigation and the photos stand out nicely in the open space.  Information on each shot, links to its categories, and occasional commentary by Go appear in the pop-up comments window instead of on the page.  I particularly like his black & white shots, especially this and that...;~))   [Photo Friday]

Note: Go's old site (no longer updated) is here.

  • desiderata 8/9/04
Description: a movie and entry point to the world of centriFuga + sTirato (Flash)
Comments: A starry night and the cutest little kitty you've ever seen follows a young lady home.  She's apparently been shopping for others in the house and when she's done delivering the goods to each of them, she and the kitty, who's been eagerly watching her through the windows, meet on the roof where a bowl and a bottle of milk's been waiting all along.  I guess I'm taking you through a side door today, which is the first part of the site I encountered, so after you watch the wonderful movie, you may wanna go around the front and walk dive right in...;~))

  • BioRUST 8/8/04
Description: a community for aspiring artists, interface designers, and illustrators
Comments: It calls itself a "progressive self-development service" where artists can improve their skills through "unique tutorials, timely advice, stunning inspiration, and constructive criticism."  There's about 50 Photoshop tutorials ranging from novice to advanced and a small collection of novice-level PHP/MySQL tutorials, plus a good-sized download centre offering free fonts, brushes, patterns, etc.  What I really like is the community gallery, though, which features a lot of 2D artworks and photography, plus some cool wallpapers, among other things.  All-in-all, this small community seems a pretty good graphic arts resource...  [mandingo@del.icio.us/]

  • ARTiCHOC 8/7/04
Description: personal portofolio featuring graphics, battles, cybershots, and wallpapers
Comments: If you go back to Ren's first series of digipix from 1999 and work your way forward, you won't be disappointed.  And a feature called cybershots, apparently started this month, gives a glimpse of things hopefully to develop.  He's also playin' Photoshop PingPong and offers a few dozen ways to "spice up your desktop."  Some additional exploration will lead you even more graphical attractions – this is version 8 and it's screamin' c-o-o-l...

  • everyday photography 8/5/04
Description: one photograph (almost) every day
Comments: After having been far from home for almost the last week, dealing with one of life's fast curveballs, I've just got to say that doing something one loves to do everyday helps keep one focused.  Doing this coolstop thing, despite the circumstances, sure helped me through each day.  So when I encountered Matthew's site, the product of a New Years resolution made last Christmas day, I immediately identified with his commitment to take a picture (almost) every day and something he said.  "I have good days and bad days."  I'm also thankful for his decision because there's some great shots.  As a tasty bonus, I'll suggest you check out his travel photography too...;~))  [rafuzo@del.icio.us/]

  • Pittsburgh Signs 8/2/04
Description: signs that comfort with familiarity, irritate with distractions, please with symmetry, or illustrate the economic condition of a neighborhood
Comments: Besides the ongoing call for submissions from photographers in Pittsburgh to add to the project online, the group behind the site recently presented an offline multimedia projection of "signs and sounds" collected by the project's photographers on a night in June.  The site houses almost 200 images of Pittsburgh signs – "Why This Project" on the sidebar not only explains what they find so appealing about signage, but helped me to understand more clearly my own fascination with signs...  [k10k #]
