  • The Social Contract 4/30/07
Description: a creative community intended to stimulate thought and discussion of the critically important issues of today
Comments: Art Into Life. "We as graphic designers, artists, photographers, filmmakers and writers present our work into the public domain and therefore it is essential that we do so with a sense of cultural and social responsibility." That's how the manifesto begins. Peter Bruce is a graphic designer working towards his BA who came up with the site's concept, launching it just a few months ago. He hopes to build a community where creatives use their skills "to achieve social change." There's already 8 members, though most of the output so far is from Zookeeper (that's Pete). Included in his profile is a gallery of 14 images of various posters he created, some of which are available as PDF files you can print out and "put up in your own environment." This should get interesting as other members start voicing their opinions through their art as well. The blog's got some cool news in it too...

  • eye-project 4/29/07
Description: from your eye, to our eye (Flash)
Comments: Deviating a bit from the usual criteria, today's pick is produced by a corporation, but aside from the small logo linking to its company site, it's surprisingly ad-free. The content is totally user-submitted, the current theme ("Look.") consisting of tens of thousands of images, some still, some video, all served up in a rather amazing Flash interface. I'll warn you that there doesn't appear to be a way to turn off the somewhat hypnotic soundscape and the intriguing visual content may tie you up for some time. Though the links to the privacy policy and terms of use are in English, the documents are in Japanese only, so if you're inclined to register and participate, you're on your own...;~))  (reminded by crossmind.net)

  • Ace Jet 170 4/28/07
Description: found type, print and stuff
Comments: "I love stuff..." says graphic designer Richard Weston. "Styles, colours, print quality, materials, subject matter, history, imperfections, relevance, irrelevance; I'm fascinated by it all." From his huge collection of Pelicans to his keen interests in found print and type, Richard's blog affords him a place to keep it all. "I have stuff stashed all over the house." Some very cool stuff, thank you...  [AisleOne]

  • codedlanguage.org 4/27/07
Description: photoblog of George Hreniuc, based in Bucharest, Romania
Comments: A certain spiral staircase urged me to explore George's photoblog, where I found another view of the same thing (I think). I also found beauty, decay, and other amazing things there. Great photography from Romania (and a few other places)...

  • Studio Pasarin 4/26/07
Description: photoblog of Eric Pasarin (Flash)
Comments: To someone who likes to take pictures, being stuck in traffic can lead to a good thing. And I'm thinking maybe they need to screen the peephole installers a little more carefully...;~))  [VFXY]

  • The Absolute Peach 4/25/07
Description: putting the 'amateur' into amateur podcasting
Comments: You've got to give Ben and Joe a little credit here. They're the hosts of their own comedy show, which they started just a few months ago because they were "sick of the cheesy, spoon-fed humour of so many podcasts loitering around the internet." They recently posted their 11th weekly episode and they're working hard to gain listeners. You get the feeling you're sitting right there at the table with these "two regular guys" who like to talk about "the sort of things people laugh about with their friends." No skits. No jingles. A brand of comedy that kind of grows on you – peachy...;~))

  • Ending Violence Against Women ::: UNFPA 4/24/07
Description: projects that address violence against women in its many forms
Comments: Intended to help "spread awareness about gender-based violence and efforts to end it," today's pick is produced by the United Nations Population Fund, documenting projects confronting violence against women, in its many forms, in various countries around the world. Available in both Flash and HTML versions, it's a comprehensive resource well worth sharing...

  • Panovision 4/23/07
Description: photographs by Reinhard Burg (Flash)
Comments: The wonderful images I can't link to directly due to the Flash interface include an architectural shot full of blues and greens and its reflection below. Not sure whether Reinhard achieved the reflection with post-processing or not, but it's a truly amazing picture in my opinion. There's a shot of a small white building in a field surrounded by a forest that looks like a painting to me, and several other cool shots of buildings meeting the sky. The images scale with the browser window – maximize your browser and enjoy...

  • 55 4/22/07
Description: a pdf magazine about contemporary subcultures which indirectly affect mass culture, plus related blog
Comments: Though the textual content of the PDF magazine is in the Russian language, there's some summary information in English in both the magazine and on the current issue's webpage. As far as visual content goes, the illustrations and photos in the Vegetables. About people. issue speak volumes in any language. "Picking vegetables for this issue was not easy. But we did what we could. After all, it is very appealing to say something about people through the prism of their vegetable existence." And while you're waiting for the mag to download (went a bit slow for me), there's more to explore in the blog in the meantime...

  • Voicu Bojan 4/21/07
Description: photography of roads traveled, people met, and signs seen
Comments: "My name is Voicu Bojan. I live in Romania. I have no CV. I make my living reading books." The roads that Voicu has traveled with his camera include the "little village" of Maguri and a region in northern Transylvania called Maramures, "a borderless land that cannot be mapped, a place of cultural clashes where paradoxes and mysteries create an indefinable feeling of simplicity and joy." He also encountered some "people and their angels" in the North. Other intriguing signs too (not to be confused with signage), and here's some additional information on this "amateur photographer striving for excellence" with even more great photos...  [Scene360]

  • Maik Psotta 4/19/07
    Description: a showcase of photographs
Comments: Limited content, just 17 photos, but don't let that fool you. When's the last time you saw a reflective sky pic like this one? Striking. Like a bridge to troubled water – love it! And at the end of the day, simply cool...

  • Divide 4/18/07
    Description: a photographers collection
Comments: From a collective of 4 French photographers comes this biweekly publication of "thematized and simultaneous images." Besides works by the crew, others may submit "their visions of a topic." The site woke up just last month and its 4th issue has already been posted. Exhibitionist, enthusiastic and surprising content ahead...

  • Paul Johns 4/17/07
Description: new blog by a working stiff who likes web design, horror movies, and animals
Comments: "I don't expect this blog to become the hottest thing on the web, I simply wanted it to look sleek, be very user-friendly, and be an accurate representation of me on the internet." Paul just went live with his personal blog earlier this month and though it's understandably light on content, I have a hunch, based on what's been posted so far, that it'll be an interesting personal space to watch. And he loves The Smashing Pumpkins too...;~))

  • digitalpeace.photography 4/16/07
Description: digital and analog photography born in Turkey
Comments: "Now my work is an intersection of monochrome and colour, sharp and blurred, ambiguous and precise, rational and irrational, questions and more questions." Inspired by music and armed with 2 dozen cameras, Baris takes a lot of pictures of himself, kids and other people, and street photos. One of his 3 digital cameras is a cheepo that makes for some intriguing post-processed shots. On the analog side, just look what he does with a Holga or Lomo. "Is boringness a criterion for the quality of a certain photo?" Maybe so, but not in this case...;~))

  • ratbite.org 4/15/07
Description: home of 'the larue files'
Comments: To keep the weekend in amusing mode around here, enter the odd photographic visions of one Dr. Larue. I encountered his clowns of the new apocalypse in early March and a recent link at body collector led me to sure coiffure, a "foamy, soft no-slip wraparound" that holds that unique hairdo in place – what a gas! Enjoy the larue files...

  • Left or Right 4/14/07
Description: Choose, Click & Go! (some mature content)
Comments: For your Saturday amusement, a site where you're presented with two things and have to select one or the other. Pop culture, brands, foods, and anything else you can think of. Votes are tallied and some of the results are interesting (and some, surprising). You learn that street art is appreciated slightly more than art museums and that Firefox rules. And a vast majority of the site's visitors see their glasses as being half full. You might even want to suggest your own pair of choices for others to weigh in on...

  • Takaaki Okada 4/13/07
    Description: photographs
Comments: Some of Takaaki Okada's works remind me a lot of the unique photos of Edmund Leveckis (review), who coincidently just happens to have snapped a portrait of Okada. Just like Leveckis, his black & white photographs are characterized by thick, dark shadows and forms. His portraits are highly emotional and some of the graininess is off the charts – magically creative photography...

  • Oxygenetic 4/12/07
Description: events of digital multimedia including digital art, photography, and audio design
Comments: Saying they "strive to push the boundaries of digital design" with a long list of creative contributors participating, the site's latest release, Renaissance is intended to "mark a brand new start" and "a new benchmark standard in art in design." There's dozens of visual works plus several downloadable audio designs in this particular digital multimedia event – extreme creativity. And though it's the first release in a year, there's 11 more events in the archives. New design. New day.  [theleftovers*]

  • word.art 4/10/07
Description: words, colors, irony, sarcasm, puns
Comments: Thanks to the schwangiest of friends (you know who you are) for making me aware of the site! "More cynical than the street, you don't know how to get to." There's a bit of random wordplay going on with its tagline and meta description tag. Reload the page. "Like the schoolhouse without the rocks or the muzak." Again. "Speak and spell with the sounds in your head." Its content is typographic art with a fun and different twist – most definitely schwangy...;~))

  • Smallest Photo 4/9/07
Description: playing and experimenting with photography
Comments: First off, I really like the design. Kirk started the site using a popular CMS with some modifications, but when he redesigned his photoblog, he wanted some new features and rolled his own more unique CMS, pulling it off nicely. And then there's the content. "I use photography as a way to bring a little creativity into my daily life." When he's not shooting with his digital SLR, Kirk uses other antique and toy film cameras, like a cheap little Diana Deluxe, an accidental Holga, or a circa 1914 Kodak. "I simply play or experiment," says Kirk. A great photoblog in my opinion...  [DWT + StyleTheWeb.com + FILE]

  • David Kleinert Photography 4/8/07
Description: photoblog focused on Australian native flora and fauna
Comments: "I have always had a passion for art and the environment and through photography I am able to this express this," says 28-year-old Australian David Kleinert. His passion is native flora and fauna, especially birds like the appropriately named Superb Parrot for example – what beautiful color!

  • Brittlelactica: Planet in need 4/7/07
Description: a 'got milk?' promotional site (Flash) (commercial content)
Comments: Okay, I'll admit that the got milk? campaign is as commercial as it gets, but it's a slow Saturday at coolstop and I've decided to look the other way in order to bring you some uniquely amusing entertainment. Besides, what's not to like about a cow floating through the universe and even stopping to answer your questions? But beware – the "most supreme being in the universe" is also a bit of a wiseguy...;~))

  • Xplored 4/6/07
Description: gallery of magic, haunted and unusual places (Flash)
Comments: The places in England xplored by Kate and Luc include castles, stone circles, and hills. Not only "magical, haunted and unusual places," but beautiful places as well. They're both photographers and Luc's site design is nice. Photos can be viewed in color, sepia, or black & white and each object has its own corresponding map of location. Cool content, presented well...

  • eLkaniho 4/5/07
    Description: illustration and photography (Flash)
Comments: The site's design is quite visually appealing, but giving the user scrollbars would be a definite improvement – you may want to maximize your window. Today's pick features illustrations and photos by one eLkahino – colorful characters and KREAtures throughout...

  • Almanac Magazine 4/4/07
Description: an online monthly photography magazine, displaying new styles and photograhers each month (Flash)
Comments: Saying it "upholds the value of photography as an artistic and historical expression on countless subjects and circumstances that surround all of us," its Premier Issue includes an extraordinairy look at Martin Luther King and another series of photographs that "allow the viewer into the surreal world that is created during war time." There's also a recording of a lecture by documentary photographer Diane Arbus to a group of students in 1970, the year before her death – really quite interesting. That's just part of what you'll find here – looking forward to the next issue coming out in May...

  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] 4/3/07
Description: photography and post-processing by Rico Bergholdt Hansen
Comments: "I'm very much still an amateur when it comes to photography and this photoblog will be a good way of improving my photo skills." Well. I'm in love with this shot of the relections of a setting sun low in the sky. More reflections. Portraits too. And a bonus – travel photos, plus a huge collection of wallpapers...;~))  [Ample Sanity]

  • Three Sixty 4/2/07
Description: a year long investigation into random image wordplay (Flash)
Comments: "With its nosed thumbed up at Americana," today's pick is a project that lasted for 1 year, offering readers "a daily dose of philosophical and metaphorical art that speaks to anyone who has grown up in this media driven society." That's how one independent curator described Juan Doe's 360. The images are all black & white drawings and collages on the low-fi side, each accompanied by what Juan calls wordplay. A most "satirical yet thought provoking" exploration of modern culture...  [iBLOG]

  • Blind Photography 4/1/07
    Description: photography by Oliver Chank
Comments: We've got everything among Oliver's interesting self-portraits. 17-year-old Oliver Chank has been taking pictures since the age of 10. "I just loved pressing the shutter." This picture at WeeklyShot caught my attention, but this one says it all...
