The Western Flatline 8/31/07 Description:
'The images posted here are my effort to keep some creativity in my life.'
Comments:
"I love shooting in airports, somehow everything is slightly other-worldly there, and there's always a sense of a forced future." For this guy who calls himself The Iron Flatline (inspired by a character with a similar name in his favorite book), airports and planes come with the territory of having to travel constantly and taking pictures is a way to "keep some creativity in [his] life." From Santa Monica to Berlin and many points between (including those airports), there's some really cool images here. And perhaps a certain celebrity interview will help shed light on the personality behind the odd name...;~))

Comments:
Start with an amazingly colorful night shot, then hit the "random" link and you might end up seeing red with an oddly placed door that makes for an interesting shot. Big photos. Andrei apparently launched the photoblog just this month and the vu is beautiful from here...;~))

works by artist Daniel Jacoby Krateil
Comments:
A short stopmotion video done when Daniel was 20 looks at "two completely different things that have analogical behaviors." It's surprising what those two things are and in the end, I was able to understand his perceived connection between them. Unusual insight. Pixels. Textured color. Short film. Exquisito...

It's been listed in the zone for over 5 years – back then, it was Joanna's personal playground for graphic design. It's now become focused on her photography and I love it. The Art of the Photogravure 8/21/07 Description:
celebrating the beauty and history of the photogravure process and its role in the evolution of fine art photography
Comments:
An "all but forgotten art," the photogravure
printmaking process originated back in the 19th century, used to produce some of the first photographs ever made. Known for its "unique tonal range" and "rich depth and texture," the process became an "effective tool" of the Pictorialists, playing an integral role in the "evolution of fine art photography." There's still some active practitioners of the art of the photogravure around the world and today's pick certainly lives up to its claim of being a comprehensive resource on the topic...

downloadable design + culture magazine (Flash)
Comments:
"No fate but what we make." The Editorial in the magazine's second issue, themed The Streets, discusses the incidents occurring at Virginia Tech and Columbine in terms of American's divided feelings about the right to bear arms. "Some people might argue that they have the right to protect themselves and their property, which is understandable but if you couldn't buy a gun so easily then things might have been different." The issue is huge with over 300 pages of graphic design, photography, writing and music-related content, available as a downloadable (zipped up) self-executing Flash file. It's also available as a PDF file, but for some reason, that's only linked from within the Flash version and not from the website. Separate music mixes are also available for each of the 2 issues. There's a lot of talent presented on its pages from very young, new artists to more well known creatives – excellent!

weblog of writer Sameer Vasta
Comments:
"If you ever see me going crazy with work, do me a favor and remind me of that, okay?" That's from one of Vasta's posts that caught my attention. In his discussion of work-life balance, Vasta offers up a short list of ways to maintain a fruitful balance and one of them is something that's always worked for me – "File work away when you're done for the day." Amen. There's plenty of other interesting content and you can certainly tell he's a writer . A "massive redesign" is in progress, but Vasta promises "the content will stay fresh." And this site isn't the only place where he squanders his time...;~))

Zach Vitale 8/15/07 Description:
photography (Flash)
Comments:
"With The Binary Series, my goal is to explore my ability to communicate aesthetically through color, shape, and form, while at the same time incorporate messages that are inherently mine, which the viewer may or may not notice." While photographer Zach Vitale realizes how important effective communication can be in life and relationships, he finds it challenging, saying the images "might serve as metaphors for the complexity of our daily conversations." There's 2 other sections of great photos besides the ongoing Binary Series, including some of my favorite photo subjects, like tasty walls, doorways, and decay...

Cool scripting in a nifty online tool – "help kick-start your creative process..."
Last Night's Garbage 8/12/07 Description:
documenting garbage on the streets of New York City
Comments:
As in another recent pick's Landfill photo series, today's pick has something to say about garbage. "Each day the United States throws away enough trash to fill 63,000 garbage trucks." The photographer behind the site has been busy snapping trash in New York City since the middle of last month and I doubt he'll run out of subject matter any time soon.

A result of Imar's first academic project for the year in his fourth year of Graphic Design studies in South Africa, he calls Blogsolid "a growing collection of tips, advice and ideas for better blogging." The blog is very well designed both visually and functionally and the ideas are categorized according to the skill level of the blogger from beginner to experienced. Photography of the Unexpected and Neglected Architecture 8/10/07 Description:
urban and industrial archeology photography by Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre
Comments:
While most of the world's older power stations, now closed, are destined to rot or eventually be destroyed, several are undergoing renovations like the one in Saint-Denis, France. It's being turned into a movie studio. But most sit there abandoned. "Since some years, perpetual demolitions led us to make pictures, a way to keep a little bit of this vanishing history," say the photographers behind the site. Documenting 5 categories of neglected architecture from around the world through spectacular photos, today's pick also features several side projects, one of which hits close to home for me...;~)) [Redmarker]

Comments:
Saying that "drawing and it's mother, art, are not exact sciences," João's been studying various approaches to Life Drawing, noting that "none is superior to another." Today's pick is a "visual diary kinda thing" that's evolved into a platform for the Brazilian artist to discuss his "inspirations, motivations and thoughts" as well. Astonishing visual works... One Stone Eye 8/7/07 Description:
photography by Stephen Blackstone
Comments:
Many of Stephen's photos feature frogs, snakes, and turtles, but the cute critters (cute to me, anyway) are just one element of the unusual subject matter in any given shot. Spectacles, old keys, and feathers are among the other objects you'll also find in Stephen's incredible photo compositions. Definitely filed under cool creativity... [Ample Sanity]
Mark A. Jackson 8/6/07 Description:
photography albums
Comments:
Of the three albums photographer Mark A. Jackson shares on the site, I find Parkour most intriguing, especially the shot of a traceur doing the "Gap Jump" – a maneuver I doubt I'll be trying anytime soon. "Parkour is in essence an urban expression akin to dance." It's about overcoming obstacles in the urban environment using "the art of displacement." His other two series, Landfill and Treeplanting deal with the environment, also through photos with detailed background information and are every bit as interesting – photojournalistic goodness... A picture of a face in the trunk of a tree among J-Bigg's digital art grabs me, as do all of the works in the first column of thumbs on his traditional page. Then there's the photos – several cool portraits and even a beautiful butterfly – and I'm known not to sugar coat things either...;~))

Comments:
A definite reminder that I have got to get myself a Holga to play with, today's pick features the photography of one JP Rosa. From The Boardwalk in Santa Cruz to colorful glimpses of Lisbon and Montreal, the visual content is wonderful. The site design is visually appealing as well, though navigation could be better in my opinion...

"When things aren't quite going my way, I like to think back and reflect on this, comparatively my problems seem trivial." That shot from a recent trip to Africa certainly makes one think. Beautiful critters and accidental gems also came out of that trip, along with colorful memories of a stopover in Amsterdam. Back home in Montreal now, with its own special color and opportunities for adventure, new memorable moments are sure to be captured... [VFXY dailymosaic]
