  • fotogeneric 1/31/07
Description: the photoblog of Chris McLemore
Comments: "Safety is joy." And so is the shot. Chris shoots with film and captures color brilliantly – please put a sign in front of this guy!

  • Photonika 1/29/07
Description: fotoblog and free photojunkie zine
Comments: Max and Mauro aren't new to coolstop – if you have never seen Pommefritz, it houses works from 2003 to 2006 – last year's industrial decay series rocks. Today's pick, from the same duo, is more like a weblog though it very much lives up to being (as they call it) a photojunkie zine. Pinky and apparently dedicated to a Greek goddess (or perhaps, someone named after her), its photos are small but most effective. The archives also go back to 2003 with a few other participating photographers. Among the collection are telling portraits and beautiful nature scenes, plus other astounding things, like this recent shot, which just blew me away...

  • left hand rotation 1/28/07
Description: odd entertainment and visual diversions
Comments: While I'm not exactly tickled by the assault rifle logo, I left the site feeling strangely enlighted. First, I took in several zany videos and an assortment of tunes from a group called Punctum! Even though my Spanish is a bit rusty these days, I sat there watching and listening and laughing. I'm still laughing. Then, it was on to the weird visual works of one Chuck Palahniuk – actually some very good collages and motion graphics. All rather odd (and entertaining)...

  • cb :: blanc & noir 1/27/07
Description: black & white photography portfolio
Comments: 36 blanc & noir squares. She goes by the name Coffee Break and what appears to be a simple showcase of photos is anything but – a profound ability to capture the beauty around her with a few selfportraits mixed in. Fine art...  [pixelsurgeon]

  • 5ft10™ 1/26/07
Description: photos, living in London (Flash)
Comments: Paul Richardson, originally from New Zealand, arrived in London just about a year ago and the site presents a dozen photoseries done since then. His most recent views from walking home is a series of night shots along the Thames – very nice! I also enjoyed his shots of some rather well-known faces, taken in a famous wax museum. There's also several series taken in Paris, plus a bonus link today, Paul's old web playground from back home with even more cool photos...  [Newstoday® PBS]

  • Jean Spézial 1/25/07
Description: paintings, drawings, and art installations (Flash)
Comments: Many of Jean's couleur works are amazing collective murals though there's some other notable oddities, such as a painted champagne bottle and hand-decorated dancing shoes. And his noir & blanc drawings (some with touches of jaune) are sweet!

  • timmeier.com 1/24/07
    Description: photography and location
Comments: Tim's Autobahn photos are apparently results of attempting to capture speed (and light) at extremely slow shutter speeds – quite abstract, though occassionally smooth. The Night series, on the other hand, includes glimpses of clarity. And then there's Parking Blocks, where you may run into bits of visual perfection...

  • Usable Light 1/23/07
Description: a story telling journey, communicating through photographic images
Comments: "It is a great passion for me to communicate with others thru the images I'm taking while trying to capture the unique moments..." says Roded, who started the photoblog in late November. Here's the thing – I took the time to view all the images and each and every one is magical in its own way. Start with the most recent and work your way back and you'll see (and hopefully enjoy) what I'm talking about...  [Photoblog Community]

  • Havec 1/21/07
    Description: art and illustration
Comments: Revolver Lover calls him "the wonderboy from Bordeaux." A brand new site featuring amazing characters, human and otherwise, with such distinct drawing style I'll just say do enjoy the works of Havec...

  • les particules étranges 1/20/07
Description: 'strange particles' plus color and black & white photography
Comments: There's actually 3 directions to take from the main page of today's pick. Enter leads to a weblog written mostly in French but full of cool photos, which Jean-François calls his (Photo)blog. There's additional galleries in the Images section and more textual content in Sciences. But those other 2 directions lead to his 2 photoblogs, one all color and the other, black & white. Superb. And a final thought. "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent..."

  • this secrette. 1/19/07
Description: stories of a fae who doesn't quite wish to grow up
Comments: "i believe that everyone has a story, but not everyone chooses to tell." It looks like a weblog but today's pick is a true personal site wherein Aein shares moonstruck memories and glitter & things. There's also (un)sent letters, some private – I love her writing style – somewhat mystical but so apparently honest. "i'm aein and this is what i want and how i feel and who i am." Lower case, as if to whisper, but with personality that jumps off the page. A vanity site of sorts of one "twirly dizzy girl" who invites you to ask her anything. Behind this secrette lie real-life stories...

  • Photine 1/18/07
    Description: personal photoblog from Houston
Comments: Laanba's a teacher (which "takes up a lot more time than you would think"), but finds all kinds of "fun things to do in Houston" when she's not working, apparently always carrying her camera. If you're interested in local architecture, museums, art, and events, or would enjoy some remarkable night shots taken in the area, you'll like Photine ("feminine, derived from the Greek meaning light") – her photoblog's been online for almost a year now and there's some gems among her favorites. Laanba also somehow finds the time to maintain Houston Photobloggers, which will connect you to about 3 dozen other local shooters. Enjoy...  [Wardy]

  • Romanian Stencil Archive 1/17/07
Description: an archive of stencils from the walls of various towns in Romania (Flash)
Comments: It's similar in content to another recent pick (1/13/07) but this one's based in Bucharest and features stencil art spotted in over 20 Romanian cities, "thanks to the constant help of people throughout the country" who contributed to its database of images. Just like that other site, it's got oodles of tasty streetart...  [<!doctype>]

  • Photography - Onno Schwanen 1/16/07
    Description: a photo path (Flash)
Comments: Enjoy a mouseless browsing experience as you wander through Onno's novel photo path. And expect a blaze of colours along the way...;~)  [pixelsurgeon]

  • Stencylvania 1/13/07
Description: unique insight on Helsinki's streetart scene (Flash)
Comments: The Count calls himself "the master of Castle Stencylvania" and apparently spent a lot of time in 2004 and 2005 roaming the streets of Helsinki for material. Dig all the tasty streetart he found – the Helsinki Quickfeed is a good place to start. I like the interface too...

  • jottkah photoblog 1/12/07
Description: an effort to post one picture per day
Comments: The site's been on the web for about a year now. Julia started the photoblog after buying a new DSLR, hoping it would "force" her to "photograph a lot" with the new camera. She's got other cameras though, including a Holga and another yummy camera from the 50s. And speaking of yummy, what a stunning night shot

  • simon koy 1/11/07
    Description: photography portfolio (Flash)
Comments: Based in Germany, Simon Koy's photographs have been published in a number of print magazines and on several CD covers. His people portraits are incredible and the documentary projects from China and Hong Kong, most interesting (and inspiring)...

  • DepicT! 1/10/07
Description: the short film competition, which challenges budding filmmakers from around the world to make mini-masterpieces of under 90 seconds
Comments: Imagine what you might do if you made a movie only 90 seconds long. You just might Go Mental. And if your lifespan was really short, perhaps speed-dating would be in order. "Can you tell a story in 90 seconds?" – a most entertaining collection of very short films...  [NOTCOT]

  • Urban Projection 1/9/07
Description: art projected in public spaces
Comments: "The aim was to be as mobile as possible and not to spend too much money." Armed with a laptop, video projector, and power generator, this new breed of street artist looks for just the right wall. No foul, no damage – moving pictures as streetart, "similar to a performance" and "only shown at the actual moment of projection." How cool is that!

  • gen chua 1/8/07
    Description: pencil drawings
Comments: "I can do things with a sharp pencil and a neat stack of white paper," says Genevieve (a/k/a genviev) – some rather astonishing things if you ask me...

  • PlasticPeter 1/7/07
Description: photography by Amsterdam based artist Peter Gerritsen
Comments: As an artist, Peter is fascinated by such concepts as the secluded space, breaking of light, and unsatisfied. And as a photographer, having posted over 40 images since the end of November, he is certainly an artist...  [VFXY dailymosaic]

  • Lehel Kovacs 1/6/07
    Description: illustration
Comments: Lehel describes his illustrations as being "eye-catching, colorful and joyful." He combines hand-drawing with digital coloring and I definitely have to agree, thank you – great style!

  • Manuel Wagner 1/4/07
Description: photography and digital artwork (Flash)
Comments: The collection of 37 photos that Manuel calls "a small overview of [his] photographic work" is so magnificent, all I can do is sit here totally inspired and hope you take the time to take them in. The art of photography, as good as it gets!

  • Atomische 1/2/07
    Description: photoblog by Tom Giebel
Comments: A little NY... Tom's "random wanderings around the city" result in some interesting shots of architecture and streetart, to say the least. And sometimes, he even wanders by helicopter – cool...;~))

  • Nothing Fancy 1/1/07
Description: a progressive Internet magazine archiving creative submissions from around the world
Comments: "Nothing Fancy, just another reason to make something special." Volume Seven, themed "Heroic," features photography, drawings, and other visual art from a dozen contributors plus music in a pop-up. Excellent creative content throughout and plenty more in the archive. If you're interested in submitting works, the theme for NFV8, planned to be released in February, should be announced soon ...
